Default Why is finding a job so difficult? Am I doing something wrong?

Sorry, but this is really getting to me. I search through the ads in papers on websites every day and usually only find a couple of opening thats are A) located at a reasonable distance B) have hours workable with my study and university requirements and C) are open to people with very little experience. Am I being too picky? Should I suffer a long commute just to work a part-time position? Should I work nights and go to seminars shattered?

Getting a part-time job somewhere shouldn't be that difficult, I know lots of other students who have one even in the way the economy is now, so what are they all doing that I'm not?

I wish I lived in a big city in a country with a much larger population. Oppertunities are so thin on the ground around here.

You might be being to picky about the location of your potential jobs. What is a "reasonable distance" to you, walking distance? Sometimes the commute is just part of getting to work, so if you have to ride the bus for an hour to pay the bills then so be it. I work part-time at MIT and after moving to a new apartment, I suddenly have an hour commute to get there. But they pay me well and I need money, so I just suffer through it. Waiting for buses and trains can be really annoying (especially in winter) but sometimes it's something we just need to do to get by. I'm afraid I can't really speak on what it's like in the U.K., but if it's similar at all to Boston I could help.

Also, wherever you're applying you should be calling them to let them know you applied, almost to the point of harrassment, if you aren't already. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, so the saying goes.

Maybe you are right, but driving for an hour and a half to go somewhere and work a three-four hour stint before driving back again seems excessive, specially considering fuel costs. If I had already graduated and could work full time I would travel a lot further.

Fuzzy Logic, have you tried finding work offered at your school?

Took me 9 months to find a job, from april 06 to jan 07. That was before the recession started. I was milking the unemployment though, so it was partly my fault .

I wish I had a big business, so many good hard workers in here I would love to hire that just can't land a job. If you can find a night job, go for it, thats what I do 40 hrs a week and a full time student and still survive. I don't have a life though so take that account.

You could try to find a job on campus. Are you calling these places that you apply to? You have to call them... It shows them that you are really interested in the job.

Yeah, I think I'm on about ten months now.
