Yes I also have this, I think may come from a fear that others will shoot you down for looking at yourself as if you are worthy of being looked it, because you think you're not. These are all only theories.

so glad i'm not the only one!

I can look at myself at home - but if there's anyone else there i never look at myself in the mirror!

In public bathrooms and such, most women look at themselves check their make-up etc - i can't even look to see if my hair is falling out of it's tie!

I just feel really embarrassed - i think it must be that you think people will see you looking at yourself, like you're something worth looking at!

My mum has never encouraged applauding yourself or thinking you are good/pretty etc - i think she sees it as being full of yourself/cocky boastful somehow - yet she can look in the mirror and comb her hair!! something i'd never dream of doing

I have the same problem. I'll just want to fix my hair, but if anyone is around I can't do it.

That's how I think. I can't look in the mirrors when others are around. I feel too inferior. And whenever I go to the restroom at school, it's always full of girls staring into the mirrors with pouty lips, gently pushing their back-combed hair up some more, adding another inch of eyeliner around their eyes, and turning around to stare at their butt to make sure it's still hot.

In a public restroom I never look in the mirror just straight down while washing my hands.

i cant look in a mirror very long when other people are around. I think they will say suttin about it. Taking it one step further, i almost never looked into the mirror at myself at all through all of middle school/high school. I knew how bad i looked, and didnt care to be reminded. Many times, i was not even sure what i look liked. Didnt care tho, couldnt fix my two biggest problems (skinny, and my hair is retarded.) Im better at it now, still need a little more weight in my face and i still havent found a good haircut for that damn cow lick on my bangs, but im getting closer to lookin as good as i can.

Yeah i get this too, i think it may be because we don't want people thinking we're vain or that they might make a negative comment

Even at the barbers after getting my haircut i struggle to look at the mirror

Same same, I never look at myself in the mirror in public washrooms when other people are around no matter how much I want to. But I never really know why that happens, I think there's always a fear that others will be looking at me too thinking, "She's so ugly, why is she even looking in the mirror" and other negative stuff like that. Then I'll just feel like maybe I'm just not pretty enuf to look at and if I feel like someone is watching me or something, I'll just want to run out of there.

I used to but... think vanity outweighed anxiety... I'm more anxious if I don't look my best. I used to just use a hand mirror descretely or in the cubicle. Do you think it's to do with thinking you don't have the right to look at yourself or something like that?

I avoid mirrors altogether(sp?), even when I'm by myself.

I've got a little better with it but it still really bothers me to look at myself in the mirror anywhere I am in public. I have never told myself I look ugly or whatever but suppose that is what I imply to myself when I see my face in the mirror.

I can only look at myself in the mirror as I'm leaving the area lol.

Yeah I don't even know "why" I avoid it though. I don't consciously think 'I'm not good enough to look in a mirror while others are around', I just get extremely uncomfortable/anxious and need to leave. Although I guess that is what it is when I break it down..

There are a lot of Canadians around here, that just struck me.

Yes, I have this issue. It's really tough for me to look at myself in the mirror, especially at school.

This is definately the reason that I don't look in the mirror.

I feel awkward looking at myself in front of other people. I usually take a quick look and attempt to fix anything without looking in the mirror.

yep yep. when i look in a mirror with people around, i feel like i'm someone else and i'm disgusted. and i'm not sure how to act. normally there are girls fixing their hair in the mirror a few feet away from me, so that's always annoying...
