Default Nervous is a understatement

Well I got invited to a beach barbeque today for Fourth of July. I am beyond nervous because i'll be meeting extended family of a guy that im currently dating. My anxiety is flaring and I just want them to like me, and hopefully not realize how quiet I am or how nervous i'll be.

Any advice on how to play it "cool" and to keep relax and less anxious? They will be drinks there but I am not really a drinker but I also know they will help mellow me out a little. They will be other people such as his friends there as well. So help please! lol I will appreciate any advice given, before I go there.

To take some of the pressure off of yourself, just remind yourself that since it is a beach, there are dozens of "escape routes" if the pressure gets too high - go off on your own or with bf for a walk, to suntan, or go for a swim, none of which would seem unusual to the others. On this forum, we normally don't advocate fleeing a stressful situation, because it just reinforces the SA fight-or-flight reflex, but it (the flight reflex, not the fight reflex!) might be a good coping strategy for you this time.

That makes a lot of sense . I was so blinded with the fact of meeting his family that I forgot its a beach and I dont have to be around them the whole time, which gives me the excuse to escape when im feeling anxious without it looking weird. Great advice, thanks!

Do you take any Medicines for SA? It could help. I'm not an expert on meds but a mild doze of Klonopin helps me deal with scary occasions like yours, I'm sure others would be able to give better advice on medicine matters though.

No, I don't take any prescribed medication just natural supplements to help with the anxiety.
