Whenever I bring it up, they fire back with a thousand plus reasons why I shouldn't get a dog... and why they don't want a dog. Moving out isn't an option for me. I have to go back to school, and if I plan to go back to University I'll be living at home for the next 4 years anyways. I can understand why they would worry I could move away leaving them with the dog, but that's not the case at all. If I did get a dog, I'd never be able to abandon it!! Since our family dog passed away last January I've been increasingly lonely, bored, and depressed (above the norm, anyway). My parents said they wouldn't get another one because they want to travel, which is fine. I just don't understand why I can't get a dog. I'm home all of the time, except for the 8 hours I spend at work... Which is like 3 blocks away so coming home at lunch to let the dog out isn't an issue. Even when I go back to school I'm not going to be at the Uni for more than 6 hours a day... Even so, I live 15-20 minutes from the university. I have the money, I have every reason I get a dog... I just don't own the house it's going to live in. What do I do? Should I just pressure them until they cave? Should I just go out an get a dog... I don't think they'd make me give it up once it's registered. Or, should I wait for my parents to leave on a vacation and get it while they're gone? I want to get a Basset Hound because I hear they're good family dogs. They're friendly, kind, not overly aggressive and only require a 20 minute walk each day to stay fit. For the most part it would be like the Beagle we used to own...

Sorry to hear about your pet passing away in January.
If you have the time and money for the dog, I don't understand why they won't agree to it, especially since you've shown your responsible enough to take care for one. This may be a long shot, but get one around the holidays and surprise them. It would be harder for them to be mad and unwelcoming to the new family pet. Especially if you rescue one from the SPCA or another organization. Keep it on the downlow until then so they don't get tipped off. If worse comes to worse, they'll make you take him/her back. Hopefully it would work out in your favor. Hope I helped |

That really sucks
You have some good ideas. I would try to talk my parents into it, drown them with all the reasons why it'd be great to own a pet and how responsible I'd be, and they would cave in eventually because they let me do anything. If that isn't working for you, then making the dog a surprise isn't a bad idea either; but I'd consider that only if you are pretty sure they wouldn't make you bring it back as that would probably be hard on you and for the dog. I really hope you are able to get the dog one way or another. |
