Default Losing a pet...

My grandmother took my cat to the vet and had him put to sleep this afternoon. If it was his time to go then that is that, but without even telling my mom... She's going to be crushed. I don't know if I should be mad at my grandmother, I'm sure my mother would have liked to have said goodbye to the poor dear, but... It's too late now. I trust our veterinarian completely and if she thought he was suffering then I'm sure it was the right thing to do. But for my grandmother to just take him away without telling any of us is a little bit of a blow. "No more Ande." That's what my grandmother just told me, she also said he wasn't meowing and hissing when she took him to the vet which is extremely unusual for him. I don't know, maybe my mother will be happy that she wasn't the one who had to take him, I'm not sure she could have made that drive. But she's definitely going to be very upset, which upsets me more than anything. I'm not looking forward to 4:30pm today.

Hey I feel for you

I lost my dog about 8 months ago, she was just turning 15 human year old. I was pretty numb until I saw her body, I cried a little. But me and my Dad buried her a the bottom of the garden and planted some wild flower seeds on the grave.

I smile when i think about her.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's devestating to lose a pet. I myself lost my cat in 2003, she was about 14 years old and she died on the way to an emergency vet's in my car at around midnight. I cried all the way home and for most of the next day.

I'm incredibly sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what a wreck I'll be when - God forbid - one of my cats dies. They are truly my best friends. I don't think it was right of your grandma to take your cat without even consulting your family, but maybe she was just trying to spare everyone the pain. Either way, rest assured that your cat is in a better place.

I can't do the pet thing anymore. Back in the early 90's, I bought a black Labrador Retriever. He only lived to be 1.5 years old. He contracted a rare lung disease. After a period of mourning, I bought a yellow Lab. He died at the same age of liver failure. I went absolutely nuts.
So, I decided that I couldn't do it anymore. I am such a huge animal lover, and I get so attached. What I do is admire and love on other people's pets.

Losing a pet is hard. My dog died seven years ago and I had him buried - I prayed for a funeral procession and that's what God gave me! I'll have to tell you about it - send me a message if you want to hear it.

Anyway, I still get letters from the cemetery where I had him buried! They give updates on the grounds and stuff - it's really a nice gesture. Sparky was a good friend (tan cocker spaniel). He was 13. It reminded me that my dog is doing okay .

I'm really sorry to hear that. I lost one of my dogs earlier this year and it still hurts to think about her. It just doesn't feel real half the time. There are moments when I forget she's gone. When I'm checking where all the dogs are, I'll count them all (there's 3, not counting her) then I'll wonder, "Where's Minnie?" before remembering that she's dead. It's weird. And upsetting because I'm always having to remember that she's no longer with us..

Anyway, as sudden as it may have all happened, hopefully your mum will be able to make peace with it.

Not sad at all. Not in that way, anyway.

If your cat was in a considerable amount of pain, maybe it was for the best, your grandmother might just be a little insensitive. I think saying goodbye is an important thing. I had to put my cat down 2 days ago. I watched the vetrinarian do it, and although it was hard to watch, it's good to be there for the animal. I'm sorry you weren't.

Sorry to hear that. Not getting to say goodbye is the worst thing.

I generally get closer to animals than people. I guess it's the non-judgemental, unconditional love. Hence, I am just destroyed when one of my pets die. I didn't get to say goodbye to our last family dog... I'd moved into my own place etc. She was my absolute best friend, one of those dogs that basically had human emotions... she was very socially anxious too so I felt a real bond with her.
