It's an automated reaction to external threats.. it comes with variations, mutations - some people will be chilled and relaxed.. some will be utterly paranoid. Dates back to evolution

I definitely don't choose to feel the way I do.

It's not a choice at all ... but there's a crazy book called Control Theory that says it is.

That's the book my therapist had me read. Needless to say, I'm not seeing him anymore.

The only choice you have is how you attempt to deal with it. Even then, it can feel like you have no say in the matter.

I disagree. It's an individual's natural reaction to change and fear. Many therapists say not to try to control it, but to work through it. Trying to stop or control such things like panic and anxiety attacks actually makes it worse.

That's the biggest bull****e i've heard. Does the writer think I that I can easily control how I feel around others?
And it was my choice to not really have any good friends, social life at 18 years old?

Not a choice, no matter how hard I try anxiety just creeps up on me. I'll be having a good day, then bam, bad day cuz of anxiety. I do not blame myself, but anxiety.

I think whoever wrote the book is a moron and has never really had to deal with anxiety.

I agree with that. Control probably wasn't the best word. But you have to take the steps. You can't sit at home and let SA control you. You have to control it.

.

The author probably thinks that an anxiety disorder is like being a little bit stressed.

I think anxiety and fear are pretty much the same thing, and is fear a choice?

Nope.

you can control it by therapy, meds, exercise, eating right, and sleeping right.

Aloha everyone, this is my first post on this site, yeah! Well back to the question, no its definitely not a choice, when my anxiety strikes out of no where, I can't control it, it's super scary! When people say u can control it, well I guess I'm not nearly close because I feel as if I can't control it but cope it different ways. My panic attacks scare me to the point I need to go to the er and check in, knowing there are professionals there sooths me. I haven't had panic attacks for over 5 years but they came back hard out of no where this week. My pcp putme on Paxil n Xanax to help calm my nerves. I used to be those long time ago so I figured I'd go back on till I feel good about myself again. Anyways, sorry for the rambling, I jus scared it will occur again like last night, I woke up every hr in a panic, then me having to call my friends to calm me down. I finally got like 2 hrs of sleep. Sorry again for long post.
