since everybody knows you are awkward and nobody in the office invite you to go to the party, you don't have to go through the extra awkwardness of having to say "no" and make up excuses not to go.

Ya but that normally only ends with the one friend that doesn't let you down and understands you 100%. Your good old friend jack daniel's. But the feeling of being left out is never a fun one. I'm facing that with the few friends I have left. They are all married and having kids now. So I'm the "weird friend". So I end up getting a forgotten invitation on in most cases as well =/
