Have a productive day, eat right, maybe some exercise and go to bed with a smile.

I can't remember the last time I got a good night's sleep. I have some wicked insomnia.

As a matter of fact, in the last 48 hours I've had two hours of sleep.

I've been having a hard time sleeping at night lately too, I usually stay up all night and then fall asleep during the day sometime, which is ok since I'm currently on break from college, but it's really bad when I actually have something to do the next day. But my mind usually never settles down and it gets worse at night which makes it hard to sleep, I also get the most depressed and lonely feeling at night when I'm up by myself.

I have trouble falling asleep for sure. Then when I wake up I just want to stay asleep, pretty much forever. Today is one of those days, for sure.

my doctor gave me lorazepam to help me sleep. i wake up several times during the night and have terrible dreams. the lorazepam helps, but i'm worried about becoming addicted to it like my dad was, so i try not to take it too much.

Sorry to seem like I'm bumping my own thread, but.. yeah.. I'm still having problems sleeping, even if I drink a little bit of alcohol before, to tire me down a little.. it's not working. I'm getting too used to staying up for 2 to 4 days in a row. I know it's not healthy for me at all. I have yet to find any melatonin pills on my campus pharmacy. It's 3 am where I'm at.

Intense exercise is the healthiest choice... as listed in another thread you can go with leaving the tv on in the backround or the radio to keep your mind occupied. Relaxation exercises are also good, focusing on your body parts and breathing.

Whats worked best for me and this sounds really silly is making up stories in my head to amuse myself as I lie there. Dosen't say much for my abilities as a story teller but I conk right out and I have fun doing it.

I tried out some 1 mg melatonin pills last night and I didn't think they were going to help and bam, out. I woke up today groggy as hell though. I read that most pills are 3 mg or higher but you really need only about 0.3 mg to help you sleep. Supposedly, too much can inhibit sleep.

When I turn off the lights and go to bed all the frustrating memories in my life haunt me for hours. I try deep breathing but can't empty my mind...

Im just throwing this out here from past experience. You said you are depressed sometimes, but now you can barely sleep. Sounds like some of the symptoms i have and im bipolar...
have you looked into the symptoms for bipolar?

definitly have problems falling asleep and waking up (since i dont really fall asleep till 3). i force myself to wake up though..whenever i sleep till 12, it gets to 5 and then to 9 and then back to midnight in an instant.

but i have been doing this thing to fall asleep that is hard to explain. i used to do it for fun with my eyes closed but it works really well for me falling asleep this last week. hopefully someone will understand and itd help but i doubt it

you know when you stare into a light and then shut your eyes and you see a ghostish image of it? basically if its all dark in the room and i shut my eyes i see random images in that same ghosting way..then it just turns from one image to another usually all related to eachother (most of the time). could be something as vague as a weird shape or a face (its not anyone specific for me..more of a cartoonish face)..then eventually i just fall asleep. i realize it makes no sense since its near impossible to explain but it works for me.

the only hard part is starting it since you kind of have to stop thinking about stuff but also concentrate seeing it

Oh man, you said it there. "The sheets aren't comfortable enough." It's a sign of a mood disorder, not a sleep disorder. I have been through this whole charade and I wouldn't necessarily recommend a sleep aid even though that is probably what you are craving. Alcohol puts me to sleep like nothing else but would I recommend it? No.

If I ever find anything that helps other than alcohol I will let you know. But keep in mind it may be anxiety/depression that is keeping you up. Regardless, melatonin and chamomile are somewhat helpful in "forcing" me to sleep. No, it doesn't help me to bed, it forces me to bed if I take enough. Alcohol is the only thing that makes me "want" to sleep. There is a distinction there, being "able" to sleep and "wanting" to sleep. I can sleep if I really need to, it's just painful.

Sorry for post bump, however just answering questions in threads where it can be seen and read by others.
I believe I've had symptoms of depression for a while, ongoing. I don't have mood swings, however. I know the symptoms of bipolarity pretty well. I think it's from a combination of stress, and my body not feeling tired. It's now been about 2 months. Currently I've been up for 3 days on 5 hours of sleep. I know it's not a manic episode, as I don't have irrational behavior, even though arguing that no sleep could qualify.

I get sleeping problems every once and a while, but mine are nearly entirely stress-related. So my methods of getting to sleep are probably borderline insulting to a real insomniac, but they are - reading a very dull book (the book of Kings in the Bible is very good for this, as are Dickens and Keats), drinking Sleepytime tea (my mom used to always make it for me when I couldn't sleep, it works more through that memory than by any virtue of its own), praying the rosary (sorry Mary, but it really does make me sleepy), and listening to very soft classical music. That probably won't help at all, but I thought I'd try.
