Default Why Didnt This Make Bigger Headlines?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/1..._n_321985.html

Quote:
In 2005, Jamie Leigh Jones was gang-raped by her Halliburton/KBR co-workers while working in Iraq and locked in a shipping container for over a day to prevent her from reporting her attack. The rape occurred outside of U.S. criminal jurisdiction, but to add serious insult to serious injury she was not allowed to sue KBR because her employment contract said that sexual assault allegations would only be heard in private arbitration--a process that overwhelmingly favors corporations.
This year, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) proposed an amendment that would deny defense contracts to companies that ask employees to sign away the right to sue. It passed, but it wasn't the slam dunk Jon Stewart expected. Instead the amendment received 30 nay votes all from Republicans. "I understand we're a divided country, some disagreements on health care. How is ANYONE against this?" He asked.
Unbelievable.

That's beyond f'ed up. Those 'nay' voters don't even have to pretend they're not bought out by corporate interests and they still get elected.

If I had it my way, I'd make it illegal for any politician to take a penny from corporations or lobbyists... they wouldn't even be allowed to accept a disposable pen. And they should be barred from working in the private sector for five years after they leave office (they can work in interim government or non-profit jobs if they don't get re-elected). I'd also make it illegal for elected officials to hold any stocks other than in mutual funds.

Public officials should be serving the public... not corporations. It's mind-boggling how so many Republicans 'serve' their terms and then go off on some cushy job for a company that they coincidently kept pushing favorable legislation for.

I am speechless after reading this article. How can humans be so evil? How do those men live with themselves?

What's up with those Republicans? I thought Republicans were supposed to be tough on crime and pro-death penalty and all that.

This is unjust. This kind of thing shouldn't happen to American citizens. I hope she sues anyway and takes them to the cleaners.

"I thought Republicans were supposed to be tough on crime and pro-death penalty and all that."

Sure, when the perpetrator is black, poor or liberal.

When it's their own, anything goes.

The whole story is pretty messed up. Had she not gotten word to her family while she was "detained" she probably would have just disappeared.

It's sad that I'm not in the least surprised that it was opposed by the Republicans.

Consider the source of the article.

This is still a bad thing to happen.

That is disgusting, but sadly money runs politics, so large corporations always have a lot of leverage when it comes to political issues.

The source has nothing to do with it. She was gang raped and they tried to cover it up and the Republican senators voted against the proposed amendment. It is sick.

Were there Democrats who voted no?
This seems to be yet another case of Republican-bashing. That's why I said consider the source - there was no mention of any Democrats other than Al Franken, and I wouldn't put much money on him at all.

That is unbelievable. How could that have been legal? How could anyone vote against the amendment?

They are all Republicans according to the Senate's roll-call of votes (linked in the original post). Here are the nays grouped together. McCain is one of them. Wonder what it feels like to have voted for someone who believes that gang rape is all in a good cause.

It's difficult to know what to say in response to stories like this. They are hard to believe, and not in the sense that they lack credibility, but in the sense that if I created a corporation like Haliburton in some work of fiction, it would seem cartoonishly unreal. this isn't fiction, though, and this crap certainly isn't funny.

Fox News has not covered this at all!!!!! Sometimes bias shows its face when a subject is completely ignored. As a country we are all being lied to by our "news" organizations that are run by corporations.
