Default Obamanomics

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/magaz ... ref=slogin

A small excerpt:

Quote:
Today’s Democratic consensus has moved the party to the left, and on issues like inequality and climate change, Obama appears willing to be even more aggressive than many fellow Democrats. From this standpoint, he’s a true liberal. Yet he also says he believes that there are significant parts of Reaganism worth preserving. So his policies often involve setting up a government program to address a market failure but then trying to harness the power of the market within that program. This, at times, makes him look like a conservative Democrat.

From the beginning, Obama has sought out academic economists, rather than lawyers or former White House aides. His first economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, is a young University of Chicago professor who shares Obama’s market-oriented Democratic views. This summer, Obama added Furman, who has a more traditional background, having worked for both the Clinton administration and the Kerry campaign. But he, too, has a Ph.D. in economics, from Harvard.

As anyone who has spent time with Obama knows, he likes experts, and his choice of advisers stems in part from his interest in empirical research.
This is what I like about Obama. He has this intellectual curiosity for practical solutions to real world problems.

I'm surprised nobody has come up with "Obamarama" or "Obamamonium" yet. .

So Obama gets praise for picking and relying on advisors while McCain is dammed for doing the same. And all in the same thread.

I'd rather have that than a candidate who thinks he knows it all.

Especially when you have Phil Gramm saying that everyone in this country is a bunch of whiners regarding the economy.

I don't like either candidates. They don't have any solutions. They will get in there just like the other Presidents and 4 or 8 years later we all will be living the same way. No health care, still importing huge amounts of Mideast oil, still spending money like a drunken sailor, etc.

We don't know that. They could be true to their word, too.

APATHY - that's what has swept the nation. I'm sick of it.

Maybe you need to read on their policies. They both have plans for health care and solving the energy crisis. We might not solve the debt, but I expect some form of universal health care and a significant reduction in Mideast oil dependence within 4 years (whether that is natural gas, US oil, or something else I couldn't tell you).

I have read their policies, but that doesn't mean crap to me. Sorry I am feeling like this, but I am almost forty years old and I have seen this crap go on since I was in elementary school. The politicians promise to get us off of oil, give us health insurance, etc. They get in for 4-8 years and we are still living the same way we did before they got in. They will usually blame it on the Washington politics. There are simply too many lobbyists in D.C. that are twisting the politicians arms.

I never praised Obama anywhere.

The McCain advisor part is relevant because in the debates he could not answer very simple economic questions yet he kept insisting he was most fit for President. When candidates were allowed to ask each other 1 question Ron Paul asked him a question anyone running for President should know. McCain scrunched his little face like he does and gave some convoluted answer that was basically saying that he was most fit for the job because he did not know the answers but he had an all-star team of 1980s Republican advisors who would basically "speak for him." Then when the most prominent one said something slightly embarrassing, he claimed that he did not in fact "speak for him." Even though the advisor IS still a very close TOP advisor. McCain took the easy way out when he could have actually took a principled stand for the free-market and personal responsibility.

With Obama, I think most people know what they are getting. But then McCain supporters try to brand him as a socialist or worse, when McCain is just as bad.

I really dislike socialism, but I have more respect for a principled left socialist ( or even a quasi-socialist with half an open mind for market reforms) than a pseudo free-market "national greatness" socialist .
