Default Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Yay! New bumper sticker : "My president is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, as opposed to say...Charleton Heston!?" (I love Charleton Heston too btw, just not all the hysteria of some "gunners")

Of course they are and rightfully so. What the hell has obama done to deserve a prize like that anyway? They aren't supposed to give the award on the basis of promise, it should be on achievement. The way I see it, the only think he has actually achieved as par as peace goes is given a few speeches that he probably didn't even right. He's fighting two wars that he inherited, but shows no desire to end, hasn't closed Guantanamo Bay and won't for a very long time, hasn't done anything to promote Middle East peace, he wants to have diplomatic talks w/ Iran, but is that alone worthy of the prize?

The prize hasn't been relevant for a long time now, but I'm still very curious to see what their logic is on this one.

Teddy Roosevelt got it before any other U.S. President.

Also, Democrats Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter.

Warm fuzzies. He gives us all a great, big, hopeful basket of warm fuzzies.

By the way, people in Europe seem to understand this better than people in the US appear to be reacting. I am an American in Europe. I do not get it. Everyone around me seems to think it's a great idea.

Have a nice day,

I agree. This makes no sense.

This will be fodder for the far right to claim that Obama has been annointed leader of all the good and nice people. Again. And while I see my self as left of center politically, this is pretty f'ing ridiculous. Have at it, Rush.

Conservatives seem to hate him with a passion whether wht he does is right or wrong. They've just been hating. This will just give another reason to hate.

I have a feeling it will make things worse for a couple reasons the first being he didn't really deserve it. Rep or Dem it doesnt matter who you are there isn't any logical explanation why he should win it, at least at this time. Time may show that he is deserving, just not this time. Just giving people hope and making them feel good doesnt deserve a prize like that. I always considered, for the most part, the peace prize for those with extraordinay contributions towards peace in either their region or the world. I'm sure if I looked through the list I would find others I disagree with.

Well, I'm not sure. I think it was Times of London that had an editorial up basically calling it outrageous.

Nothing from Glenn Beck that I've seen, but Rush Limbaugh and Michael Steele have weighed in.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/1..._n_315167.html

I like the smackdown the Democrats give the RNC at the end of this article. At least in this case, they've grown a pair.

"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists -- the Taliban and Hamas this morning -- in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize -- an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride -- unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore - it's an embarrassing label to claim."

Have a nice day,
Kelly

Well, the Germans approve, in any case. By Germans I mean the people who've talked to me about it and a few articles I read on the internet (Der Spiegel.)

Although, from what I gather, the reason they like it would make sense only if if the Nobel Peace Prize's name were changed to the "Nobel You're-not-Bush-Hallelujah! Prize"

Have a nice day,
Kelly

Wow, didn't expect this but I seem to be one of the few who's not surprised in the least bit. The nominating process for the Nobel Prizes have been kept secret for the last 50 years or so, so there's no way to know who nominated and chose him, however he needed this because with the mid term elections coming up, the chance of being impeached isn't (or now wasn't*?) out of the question because whatever side you're on, you have to admit he hasn't done a single thing except run up the deficit by $1.4tril dollars in just his first 8 months, that's x3 times more than Bush ever did in an entire year, and its only going to get worse. This may or may not have immunized his presidency but only time will tell, but considering Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini were nominated as well one time or another, I don't see the merit in such an award.
