Default Italian scientist reproduces Shroud of Turin

Italian scientist reproduces Shroud of Turin
He used materials, techniques that were available in the Middle Ages

ROME - An Italian scientist says he has reproduced the Shroud of Turin, a feat that he says proves definitively that the linen some Christians revere as Jesus Christ's burial cloth is a medieval fake.

Of course a lot of people will still refuse to accept the facts.

I thought the Shroud of Turin was debunked years ago.

Have a nice day,

It was through carbon dating. But a lot of the religious folks refused to accept that.

Why does this even matter? Some old rag seems quite trivial compared to claims that Jesus was born to a virgin and fathered by a god.

It was, pretty much. A number of years ago the Vatican allowed a few pieces of cloth from the edges to be removed, so they could be carbon dated. The samples were sent to three different labs who did their analyses independently, and they all came to a date around 1250 AD (if I recall correctly). This fits in with the provenance of the shroud - it isn't mentioned in any records prior to the Middle Ages.

The opposition to this has said that the part of the shroud that was sampled might not have been original, that it was added in the Middle Ages after a fire damaged part of the shroud. There's some evidence that might be the case. For radiometric dating to be absolutely definitive, cloth containing the image itself would have to be dated, but the Vatican won't allow that.

Even if could be dated to within Jesus's time and couldn't be reproduced, it wouldn't mean anything. People see an image of some bearded guy and assume it is Jesus because it is a popular depiction but there isn't any reliable account of what he actually looked like. The whole thing is pretty stupid.

Exactly. There is a mountain of impossible claims made by religion. Trying to prove that one of them is accurate (and from the evidence so far it does not seem this way) is not going to convince the skeptics.

It really doesn't matter. It's like how nearly all of the Veronica's Veils have been debunked. People have gone on pilgrimages to these places since they appeared, it's become tradition. The miraculous thing is only secondary, the main thing is that they believe it's something that connects the spiritual and the mundane.
