Debra Lafave allowed contact with children
Lafave is the former middle-school teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old boy. She served 2 1/2 years of house arrest but is still on sex-offender probation. After a hearing Thursday, Circuit Judge Wayne Timmerman said that because Lafave has completed sex-offender therapy, state law allows her "appropriate" unsupervised contact with minors. Prosecutors did not object. Lafave still isn't allowed to live near a school or work with children. Her attorney called it "a good step forward." Lafave did not comment. What do you think about this? This ***** is suppose to be in jail. What are these people thinking, letting her get away with this crime? |

She was at school, a pretty appropriate place with appropriate contact, I'd say, and she did something inappropriate. Honestly I think there are much more serious things than teenagers having voluntary sex and the arbitrary dividing line between adult and child.
And if the pictures I found are online are the same woman...damn. |

I am not that familiar with the purpose of the request but I heard it had something to do with having contact with family members.
This may not be a popular opinion, but it is the rational one: Many 14 year olds are not "children"- at least not in the sense that pre-pubescent ones are. Many teenagers are sexually mature and engaging in consensual sex acts. Am I saying they should be doing things with adults/teachers? No. But the reality is that someone who has sexual contact with a teenager is probably not a sexual threat to young children. Who knows, these teens were probably more "manly" than the adult husbands of the teachers. They weren't looking to molest a child. Yes, there is a double standard based on gender and looks. And there is probably something mentally wrong with these teachers. However, I just don't think what they do has anything to do with being a danger to children. It's probably a case of having nieces and nephews and cousins and wanting to be allowed to go to family functions, when there is no danger that she is going to harm them. IIRC, Genarlow Wilson ( and I'm sure many other young adult "sex offenders") wasn't allowed to have contact with his younger siblings- as if 18 year olds who have sex with 15 year olds are looking to incestuously molest children. There was a comment about the other teacher who married her student. There are also cases of FAMILIES ( you know married couples with children) who are not allowed to live in the same state because the older spouse is a "child molester." And there are also many laws where certain sex offenders ( who presumably served their sentences and were allowed to go home) are pretty much forced to live in places and in ways that are a much GREATER DANGER to children. I guess because laws aren't really supposed to make sense and protecting children is just something used for political points.

What's wrong about this is that her light treatment, and some of the reactions here, expose the sexist nature of this issue. Had she been a nice looking young man, she would have gotten a harsher sentence. Had she been an ordinary looking women, same deal. An ordinary looking guy, worse yet.
There is also an assumption that guys are up for it, whatever "it" is and whomever "it" is with. Not an entirely crazy assumption, but here's the rub. Lots of girls who are physically mature are up for it, too. Talk about blasphemy. Yet as a society we see 14 year old girls as innocent and virginal, and we see 14 yr old boys as young elk in the rut. Doesn't serve either group. The other issue is that the psychological dynamic in these situations is often unequal and at least implicitely coercive. The adults take advantage of their position of relative power, and the child gets some need met, but in a way that's certainly never ideal.

Some of the posters say it is ok that she is hot and most of the boys fantasize about their teachers. Honestly I used to fantasize about some of my female teachers as well.
However, what if both of them were gay? I mean what if she slept with a 14 year old girl or what if the teacher was a handsome dude? Would they release the person so easily? I doubt that they would.
