I like comedian Bill Burr's idea...everyone in the US should stop having kids for a few decades. Get the population down to about 30,000. Then, we'd have a surplus of everything. The demand would be so small that everyone could have a giant house with a swimming pool, we could all go to the Superbowl, everyone could have their own tank, etc.

Basically all modern industrialized nations already have zero population growth and the US population only grows due to immigration. Japan is the most extreme example. Their population is aging and unless something magically changes (like they allow tons of immigration) Japan will have a much smaller population in 50 years than they do today.
You need a birth rate of 2.1 kids per couple merely to maintain a steady population. That extra 0.1 I guess is tossed in to cover kids who die before they can reproduce to replace themself. As you've likely noticed, big families are not very common any more. People are shocked if they see a family with 6 kids (that could actually fill the SUVs folks so love to buy).
