I was on Paxil for a year once and I didn't gain any weight and the Paxil itself didn't do a damn thing for me - I still had suicidal thoughts.

I was on Lexapro for 2 years once and that was better.

Just a week ago, I had a major panic attack and was admitted for 5 days in the hospital, so now I am on Celexa (new SSRI) my doctor said it is basically Lexapro with a bit of a tweek to it. Usually it takes up to a month or so, but I think just taking it for close to 2 weeks now - it is the best anti-depressant I have ever taken.

Good luck with the Paxil!

antidepressants dont cause weight gain or loss but fear of weight gain is a common excuse for refusal to take them

mirtazepine is associated with causing compulsive eating for some

I did, especially when I was on a high dose - 40mg. That said, paxil has been tremendously helpful... though I haven't tried any other drugs.

arth67 your anwers are really, really annoying. I honestly wonder where you get your facts from sometimes because your information is very misinforming. First you say every SSRI is a prozac type of medication in every SSRI related thread, when in actual fact they are not. Each SSRI works slightly different. Prozac being a good example of one that is different from the others. For example Prozac has 5-HT reuptake inhibition, 5-HT2c antagonism and NE reuptake inhibition. Whereas Paxil for example has 5-HT reuptake inhibition and ACh(m) antagonism. Look this up if you don't believe me.

Also, Anti-depressants do cause weight gain, as do anti-psychotics and many other medications. I think the volume of people who have said they have gained weight while on them speaks for itself (maybe not all on this forum but just browse around other forums and check over reviews of meds at revolutionhealth to see why). I understand some people are more prone to gaining weigh than others. But for example I'm a skinny guy, always have been. I gained weight on paxil but didn't really gain weight on any other medication. I attribute this to the sedation and generally the way Paxil affected my metabolism or craving for foods while on it. Similarly Mirtazapine could have also made me gain weight as it increased my appetite hugely but luckily I wasn't on it long enough for any substantial impact. Furthermore, Effexor XR decreased my appetite to very small crazy amounts and as a result I lost weight. So in my experience there is enough proof their to justify to me that they do cause weight gain and loss.

So please think before you start throwing in things like "antidepressants dont cause weight gain or loss" as fact as it is very misinforming. Yes some people are put off from thinking they will lose or gain weight, but it doesn't mean these effects aren't true or that they should not be 'aware' of them.

End of rant.

Yes, I had significant weight gain in under a month with Paxil. It made me crave horrible junk food for sure.

Therefore my question is: if I gain weight on lexapro is it possible that I won't gain weight on some other ssri?
