Angry SSRIs and Sexual Disfunction

Do all SSRIs have the same sexual side effects? I've only been on Citalopram for 2 weeks and I've already lost nearly all my libido. As a 22 year old male this is quite upsetting. It also now takes me over an hour to finish.

Is this unique to Citalopram? Is there anything I can do/take to counterbalance this effect?

Thanks.

yes- nearly all SSRIs will have some detrimental effect on sexual functioning. This side effect is not unique to Citalopram. One of the most common treatments doctors prescribe for SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction is Wellbutrin, another antidepressant. Taken together, Wellbutrin counteracts the Sexual dysfunction, while at the same time, enhancing the antidepressant response. Other less utilized treatments/adjunct meds for SD include-- cyproheptadine, mianserin, mirtazapine, Dopamine agonists (Requip, Mirapex), and sometimes, Stimulants (Adderral, Ritalin, Dexedrine).

Wellbutrin is often used to counteract this.

Thanks for the replies all, I will definitely be asking my doctor about Wellbutrin. As a slight follow up question; without getting in to too much detail, how effective was Wellbutrin for sorting this issue out? What I mean is, did it get you back to your good old self, or was it just a bit of an improvement?

I hate to be a downer, but I didn't find Wellbutrin to be of any help at all in relieving SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. Then again, I only took 150mg/day...

My recommendation would be to just get some erectile drugs. (If your drug plan doesn't cover them, then you might want to buy them online, as they are expensive domestically.) They won't solve all of your problems, but they'll at least help with the core physiological component, when the need arises.
