i took .5 mg for about 3 months, i didn't gain any weight, but it did make me a little bit tired. And i did eat more than usual, i guess im just not good at retaining calories. the more you take, the weirder it makes you feel....its not a bad weird just a spaced and unable to think weird. it makes sleeping easy.

just curious like on the prescription info it says antipsychotics may increase the risk of devolping diabetes does that mean its a cause? like obviously if someone is extremely overweight theyre at risk but im talking about the drug itself...assuming you eat right and exercise does the drug cause the diabetes?>

It's not that clear-cut. EVERYBODY has the potential to develop diabetes, including the people who eat a perfect diet and exercise regularly. So even if you're considered to be low-risk, it will probably increase your risk of developing diabetes. People with obesity AND on an antipsychotic are still going to have a higher risk than somebody on an antipsychotic with a healthy lifestyle. As far as I'm aware though, there hasn't been much close examination into just exactly which groups of people are most prone to the increased risk, or whether or not that increase is fairly uniform across the board. Somebody else might have more information on that though.

With something like diabetes (or cancer, or lots of other things), you can't really talk about CAUSES of the disease. There are contributing factors, and antipsychotic use is one of these.

That being said, to my knowledge, the increased risk of diabetes is only really significant with the *pine atypicals - eg. quetiapine (seroquel), and olanzapine (zyprexa.) I don't think risperidone is too bad in this regard, but I'd still be concerned about the potential for movement disorders, which antipsychotics CAN directly cause.
