I started benzos for the first time last week. My doctor gave me prescriptions for both Xanax and Ativan to try them out and see what I thought. I don't have a preference yet between the two, but I DO notice a positive effect from them. I can talk to people a little more naturally, and after so many years of going to into "freeze" mode around people, that is such a relief.
My doc made it clear, though, that she views benzos as a short-term, as-needed solution, and in the long run she'd like to try to address the basis of the anxiety through Effexor or a similiar med. (I'm already on Zoloft and notice zero difference in my anxiety from that.)
I'm open to trying Effexor, but I know many people do take benzos daily and I'm wondering how I can talk to my doc about that being a possibility. Also, those of you who take them daily, what's your dosage like? I'm finding good results with about .75 mg. of generic Xanax, about twice a day.
Thanks in advance!
Oh- editing to add one more question. What about beta blockers? I understand docs are less nervous about prescribing them, but that they're used more for specific anxieties, and I'm not sure how specific mine is. I just have a really hard time talking to people, especially one-on-one or in small groups. Is that too general for a beta blocker?
ACK - one more question. I also take dexedrine for my ADD. Since dexedrine seems to increase production of norepinephrine, and beta blockers block it, wouldn't they just cancel each other out?
