Arrow [EDIT] Off Prozac 68 days....still no libido...and no anxiety!

Edit 2/24/09
Its been 68 days now and the same thing is still going on.

Is this permanent?

------------------------------------------------

I was on Prozac for 6 months at 10mg and 20mg (June-December). Stopped mid-december due to sexual side effects.

I know Prozac has a long half life (4-6 days and 9.3 for its active metabolite, norfluxetine) but I have been off it for 33 days and it feels like I'm still on it. In all 33 days, I never experienced any form of withdrawal whatsoever.

The good is that anxiety is still significantly reduced and depression has not returned at all.

However, I am still experiencing delayed ejaculation and decreased libido.

Wierd huh....thoughts?

There is some scary stuff they are finding out about the formerly thought of as innocuous class of drugs SSRI. For instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-SS...al_dysfunction . I took them for a long time and my libido is not the same as it was prior to taking them. I wonder if they are discovering that some of the changes it makes become permanent (this article mentions gene alterations) after long-term use (usually much longer than yours).

Half-Life doesn't mean it's cleared from the body completely in that amount of time though.

Let's put it in perspective. With any other SSRI, if you want to start taking an MAOI, you have to be off the SSRI for a minimum two-week washout to avoid interactions. With Prozac, instead of two weeks, you have to wait a minimum of FIVE weeks in order to avoid them. So I wouldn't be too pessimistic about this seemingly persistent problem just yet.

the sex response is altered rather than stopped so you need to experiment

Most likely there are still 'trace' amounts in muscle or fat tissue that hang around. After about 2 months, when your system should be clear from the drug, your libido should return. You weren't on it long enough to suffer from post-SSRI sexual dysfunction.

See a urologist, it's not likely the Prozac is to blame if it's been out of your system for a few months. I've taken SSRIs for long bouts and when I came off them the libido returned. Are you overweight, do you exercise daily?
