Default Lexapro too expensive

I'm a broke college student, and just dished out almost 100 bucks for a month's supply of lexapro and i don't even think its working. my psychiatrist said we may have to double the dosage, but see how this goes 1st. No way can I afford this long term.

When I see him again in a few weeks, do you think he'll understand and switch me to an SSRI that I can get generic and try it. what SSRIs what generic brands? I'm thinking Paxil might be my best fit, but I don't know.

Many pharma companies (including Forest Labs the makers of Lexapro) have patient assistance programs that if you can't afford the meds and meet the income eligibility requirements they provide your pdoc with a 3 month supply to dispense to you. Obviously not knowing the exact details of your situation I can't tell you if you would qualify but applying certainly can't hurt!

Also I did some digging in my prescription drug benefits from my insurance (they list if a generic is available) and here's what I found:

Paxil CR: yes
Paxil: Yes
Celexa: yes
Lexapro: no
Prozac: yes
Zoloft: Yes

If there are any others you want me to look up just hit me up with a PM and I'll see what I can find out.

Hope this helps!

you could consider buying it online....or just using another, non-brand name SSRI. there are differences, but overall, most SSRIs can provide similiar results (in many people) Prozac can be alot different.... if you use your doctors prescription, you can get drugs alot cheaper online.

Celexa is a stereo isomer of lexapro and will probably be prescribed as an alternative.

Sometimes dr.'s or counselors give samples. So, he'll either give you samples or he'll need to prescribe something you can afford. I lived on samples for a least a year at one point. Celexa, Prozac, and Paxil generics are only $4/mo. at Walmart.

Yeah he handed me samples for about 4 weeks, but i drifted off the meds and i wasn't suppose too so I had to restart the 5 weeks or so trial so to speak. I think they only have a small stash of them. I checked online, I could get it for about $60/month which is still fairly expensive for 10mg pills, but they ae not working. If dose is doubled, the price goes up, but I just haven't had any satisfaction with it.

WALMART/SAM'S CLUB $4 Prescription Drug Program
Mental Health Medications

You will find generics of Celexa, Paxil, and Prozac on their cheap list. There are also three TCAs and trazodone to round out the list of ultra-cheap antidepressants.

Celexa is substantially the same as Lexapro.

hmm ok, I'll have to ask him about Celexa. My other concern is I'm very depressed and don't forsee it going away. When I started seeing him, I had the mindset that he'd prescribe the magic pill and everything would be ok overnight. Not the case.

so many different options when it comes to SSRIs, and it takes a long time to see if it will help.
