I say if you know what you are looking for then tell your doc & mention why you think it might be best. It'll likely be easier if you've tried other meds before but it shouldn't be a problem either way. They might mention some others & explain why you might try them instead but as long as you're honest I think it'll go really easy. The main thing is to explain your symptoms etc so they know what you are using it for also

If you're talking about a family doctor, mine is the same guy who delivered me and my sister as birth.
As for psychiatrists, I've seen two. The first, a female, was awesome. The second, a dude, basically flat out told me he couldn't help me except to increase my dosage of Effexor..uh no thanks dude. |

Ya, its my family doc. He seems like a good guy so I'm not too worried about it, just was wondering if there's an SSRI/med combo that is more often perscribed by Canadian docs vs US or international. Oh well I'll just see what happens.

I doubt you'll walk out the door without a prescription for an SSRI, most likely Paxil.

I walked into my doctor's office, told him I have SA, and asked for a Paxil prescription. He went along with the diagnosis and meds, with few questions.
I'd say if you're asking for something that's low in the hierarchy of anxiety meds, you'll get it. It may be more difficult getting him to prescribe you something strong without trying a lesser one first. I know Paxil's low on the totem pole. I'm not sure where Cipralex stands.

Cipralex is no doubt even lower on the totem pole than Paxil. The only good reason a doctor has right now for choosing a different starting medication (besides a relative's past success with a certain med) is that its name-brand status means it costs more.
It shouldn't be hard to get, my family doctor put me on it instantly when I went to talk to him.

My family doctor started me off with Paxil,Remeron and then Celexa. The doctor at the clinic started by recommending Celexa first but after i gave him a list of meds i had tried already he gave me Wellbutrin at my request and Cipralex for the anxiety. If you have a drug preference just ask for it, most doctors are willing to be flexible if you want a certain medication. My friend has had great success with generic Paxil.
