They're in the same family of drugs - benzos - and both work on a neurotransmitter called GABA that is responsible for inhibiting anxious signals in your brain. I've heard that Klonopin can have slight antidepressant effects - I've heard that Klonopin can make people depressed. I've heard that Xanax can have antidepressant effects. In the end, I think it's just a matter of trying different meds to see what fits you best.

Diagnosis: Dysthymia, social anxiety, inattentive ADD.

Current meds: Nardil, 60 mg. daily

The real difference is that klonopin lasts much longer and its anxiolytic effects are more subtle. It just seems like a drug that lasts 24 hours would be more appropriate for epilepsy than one that lasts 6 hours.

I've taken up to 5mg of klonopin daily and if i took that much xanax at once i'd probably be drooling on myself or asleep.

I took it because its what my doctor gave me and because i was experiancing panic attacks. After the panic disorder calmed down i moved over to xanax.

Supposedly xanax is more desirable of a drug for drug abusers so doctors tend to try klonopin first. Although this is totally bull****, benzos are very poor recreational drugs.

I like klonopin cause it lasts about the length of a work day when i need it. I would have valium if it were up to me but my psych disagrees. Another good thing about it, is its potent, and even at its lowest size pill "0.5mgs" it is still effective; this is useful when you are up against benzo phobe doctors.

Tradition and Religion are the iron ball and chain around the feet of progress.

When I was on Klonopin, I still needed (and used) Xanax for immediate relief. A lot of ppl. on the CrazyMeds site seem to like Klonopin.

I could not tell Klonopin helped me, but sometimes I seriously worry the same about Xanax unless at highest dose for serious panic.

Also, I know Klonopin is used to wean people off more addictive stuff (including allegedly Xanax) because of Klonopin's long half life.
