One thing though rockintom..according to this http://www.forbes.com/2006/03/21/pfi...1topdrugs.html
Effexor is not only the biggest selling worldwide antidepressant, it's also the only one on the top 10 list of the worlds best selling drugs.

Probably because the people that are put on it can't get off the med because of the damn withdrawals, thus have to keep buying it. As well as adding the thousands of newcomers to the med each year unable to come off when they finally decide to, and you have a constant flow of money.

Haha thats what i was kinda thinking coz people usually say 2 things about it
A) it's the most effective AD (bar MAOIs) and B)it's the hardest AD to quit. So I think either, or both of those reasons make it a top seller. How long where you on it anyway?

I think it was around 4 months, maybe longer I'm not really sure. I was only at 75mg and I was using the 'XR' version. My doc wanted to try me on 150mg but I refused because it was already playing games with blood pressure and causing me to have other health problems. That was when I was put on Mirtazapine.
It does work pretty well for depression and anxiety but I just could not tolerate the side-effects.

I think the xr version is the only version thats available these days, effexor is an odd drug though, apprently above 200 mgs the sexual side effects go away coz the noradrenaline kicks in, not sure why you were getting noradrenaline side effects at 75 mgs though, thats just odd.

Yeah it was really odd. I had a dry mouth and similar side-effects to that of the NRI Roboxetine which I took in the past. It was really bizarre. The only thing that might explain it is maybe it was really potent with the serotonin or something.

I would say it was probably the worst of all the medications I've taken. But remember this is just my experience, if you decide to use Effexor you might have none of the issues I have had.

The only thing that really bothers me are the notorious withdrawls, all the bad side effects in the world don't really bother me if a med is easy enough to stop taking.
Apparently in some rare cases it's even impossible to stop taking it, which is freaky. "But the most disturbing freaky rare side effect with Effexor XR (venlafaxine hydrochloride) is what Wyeth disingenuously calls "withdrawal syndrome," that once you acclimate to Effexor (venlafaxine hydrochloride) you are basically hooked for life. If not on Effexor XR to take the worst of the edge off. The discontinuation syndrome never goes away if you try to stop." http://www.crazymeds.us/effexor.html Granted this is extremely rare.

I would imagine it would be worse at 150mg or above to come off. Luckily I was only at 75mg but even that was pretty rough withdrawals. The brain zaps, the insomnia, and the nausea went on longer than any of the previous meds I've taken. One thing I used that really helped but I can't explain why, was caffeine. It really got me through the withdrawals especially the brain zaps.
Effexor is so tricky because it's so good when it works for some people but so bad when it's not working or working anymore and you want to come off. Maybe you could try Pristiq as it's similar and has a longer half-life?
