Default Visitor message length limit?

would it be possible to allow longer visitor messages? i keep running over the 1000 character limit, and having to cut messages up, and the process is a bit complicated, and parts often get posted onto my own page somehow.

Visitor messages are meant to be a short, status type message. Lengthier messages should be sent in a PM.

sometimes i like leaving the messages public though, because then other people can read them also. it just seems arbitrary to limit the length - the worst that could happen is someone's profile page might get kind of long. ??

or... maybe the code could be changed so it would automatically split up your message into separate posts, like at paragraph boundaries?

and btw, if other people are bothered by this, you should chime in here, as otherwise they'll think i'm the only one!

That sounds like a good idea to me! I have occasionally written a visitor message that is over 1000 characters. And I'm not very good at splitting up my messages when this happens. But even more frustrating to me is the social group character limit. The Unite! group members can get pretty chatty at times (Good for us!!!), and we often need more space for our posts.

And to me this makes sense. The length is what differentiates the public page message versus PM. If there were unlimited length the public page would lose something, IMHO.

okay, how about this - allow longer visitor messages but truncate them to 1000 characters on the person's profile page. then when you click on view conversation you could see the whole thing.

i don't know how much control you guys have over the code for this site though.

it's kind of an important issue for me because i'm really cautious about making friends with people, and being able to see some conversations they have with other people helps a lot in getting to know them, and feeling more comfortable talking to them. and i keep going over the 1000 character limit!

plus, some conversations are sort of just semi-private - a bit too personal for the forums, but something you don't want to have to keep repeating in private messages to different people, and lets other people get to know you better as well.
