Default deleteing offensive posts vs locking threads

wouldnt it be better to delete offensives posts instead of locking the entire thread up? i thought the Anne Frank was a good thread but it got locked up because one poster believes that the holocaust was fake. if someone gets offended by this wouldnt it be better to delete the post instead of leaving the post and locking the thread? the offensive material is still there.

Even after deleting the posts, some people who remember it might keep responding to them. Then it gets confusing because other people who haven't read the deleted posts don't understand what others are responding to.

I agree though that good threads can get wiped out because of one post that isn't acceptable. If someone doesn't like a thread, they can do this intentionally.

I think they should reverse the letters of offending posts. That way we know what's unacceptable to the mods and it also become hard to read it without a lot of effort. But you still accomplish making some posts fade away without actually deleting them or locking the thread. Either that or translate the post into pig latin. (jk)

It was causing some drama outside of the thread.

The guy was such an obvious troll. Not sure how these trolls are able to ruin threads so easily.

Because we tend to be more lenient with new members.

And see that alone is a problem. New members can get away with saying things like that and old members are beaten on a regular basis. If only that "leniency" extended towards people who have put years into this site with thousands of posts, and put themselves out there. Just something to chew on, not trying to get myself banned...

Well I see even the mods use this reason, but really whats the big deal. Eventually people will learn not to respond to the offensive post. And the confusion.... really? I'm sure people will realise after seeing the **POST DELETED** note that something went down and to just continue with where the thread was prior to the offensive post. I'm not saying this is a perfect solution, but the current method just completely cuts down the discussion.

We don't want to scare new members off.
Usually, I would give the member a warning for the first offense, then it's infraction.
It takes a while to get to know the Guidelines.

I should have expanded on that more. Generally, we send a PM to a newer member and tell them to read the guidelines and include a link. Their offending post is then either edited or deleted.

In the case of the latest troll, he was rather subtle. The majority of his posts were innocuous and could have been made by any one of you. He joined about a month ago and made a few posts here and there. His first post that crossed the line wasn't until October 15th. The post was deleted and he was given a Warning. Since then he expressed some offensive opinions which were reported by several members and resulted in his being banned. These posts took place in only 2 threads, both of which have a religious base. There are 2 subjects that are guaranteed to start arguments, religion and politics, and just because someone expresses an opposing opinion does not make it an Infraction. Saying that The Diary of Anne Frank is the "Greatest work of fiction ever.", Does not even warrant a Warning. There are a lot of people who deny that the Holocaust took place and if he believed that then the book would have to be fiction.

And that is just pure racism and hatred, its not some benign opinion. This is a fine example of why people struggle with the rules around here.

To add to what the moderators said, it's really going to depend on the thread. We do both and it's a judgement call that I or one of the moderators make.

This is something that has come up before.

I understand some of you disagree with some specific decisions or generally how we moderate, but when it comes to S&C we are more likely to just close a thread when things get heated. While we recognize the forum's place in the community, the site is primarily about supporting those with social anxiety and facilitating controversial discussion (whether or not you feel it's controversial) takes a back seat to that goal.
