Just curious.

But there is a story that has been well known to older members about a certain person of the former SAS staff reading PMs way back in the old times. If that is the case, how is it PMs cannot be read now?? Just wondering???

it's worth saying, that from a technical point of view its very possible and they (site admins) could easily read anyones PM if they wished..

Its just not a feature built into the forum software but one could use any tool, read the sql database and extract all PMs from anyone if they really wanted.

There was an admin setting way back then - it's different now.
We cannot read PMs.

Besides, what's so juicy about them? Got something to hide?

Typical. If you have "nothing to hide" surely you dont mind your privacy being invaded...

It was just a question John, and based on past history I think it was a valid one.

I dont want my PMs, mail or anything else private read by a 3rd party.

Of course, if you send an objectionable PM and the recipient reports it, it gets read by mods then.

Prolly cause the site admin (Drew) can read Pm's. So he would prolly have to look into it instead of 1 of the mods.

We can investigate, too. I have often asked questions.

When a PM is reported, the text of the PM is sent with the text. If the PM goes against the guidelines then Infractions can be issued.

This.

The full story is that PMs are stored as plain text in the database. This is unlike passwords which are stored as MD5 hashes, as opposed to plain text, meaning we can't know what your password is.

So yes, it is possible for me to read private messages from the database, but have I or will I? No

The short answer: unless a member reports your PM to us, we will not be reading your private messages.
