Default my insurance doesn't cover seeing a psychologist

I'm a student and while I do have insurance, it barely covers anything, and it does not cover seeing a psychologist. I'm pretty sure I have SAD and would really like to see someone, but I can't afford to pay for sessions. Any ideas for what I can do for now? I still have a few years of college left before I can get a job with decent health insurance.

Do books/tapes help at all?

Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

I've never been able to afford professional help either. But you know what? You don't need it.

What you need is the vision to recognize what is important in life, and a strong enough desire to go after it.

set your priorities straight. make sure you keep balance in life. Don't forget to do the things you enjoy. Write down a list of things that are important in your life. Where u find that it's lacking pick up the slack. Whatever you do don't let anything get in the way of being yourself and where u wanna go in life.

Right now I don't have insurance but I can see my therapist free with the country. Check your local county programs or look in the yellow pages. You may have some free services you don't know about.

I'm seeing a therapist for the first time on the 30th. Are therapists able to write prescriptions or is that only psychiatrists?

im pretty sure only psychiatrists and doctors can prescribe medication. i went to my doctor about it a few weeks ago and he prescibed me wellbutrin and recommended that i go see a therapist. i think talking to your doctor is the best way if you think medication will help. my doctor was pretty undrerstanding and he actually asked me what i wanted to try(i chose wellbutrin).

Some psychologists can write prescriptions if they have a degree in psychopharmacology. It's best to assume that your therapist can't, because most don't have this degree.

When you say you are a student, do you mean college? When I was at one large public university ( U of MD), I saw a psychologist and Psychiatrist there. All their health services were provided for a low price. Mine was $10 per visit. I am sure not all colleges have the same services, but a lot do. That was the last time I went anywhere or tried meds, almost 5 years ago.

You should be able to qualify at your local community mental health facility.

Thanks, I figured I should see a doctor first. I did years ago, but all she did was recommend talk therapy. I was passive and shy. It was hard for me to express the way I really feel. Next time around I'll make sure I write all my feelings down and really talk it over with my doctor and ask for meds. I don't want to go to a therapist first, especially if I can't get a prescription.
