Default How do I deal with family who don't understand my social anxiety?

My mom doesn't understand how difficult social anxiety has made my life. She gets on my case about not working even though I really want to work and have a hard time finding a job. I have been looking for a job, although my search is somewhat limited.

She's also frustrated with me not having finished college yet. I've been going to school on and off and I usually end up dropping my classes. Part of it is due to my SA, but a lot of it is also ADHD, depression, and a lack of motivation.

I wish she would be more supportive of me and understanding of my social anxiety instead of just expecting me to get over it. How do I deal with this?

My parents did the same but thats kind of their role. They're afraid that if they don't push you than they're enabling you to continue your self-destructive ways.

Assuming your mom knows about your social anxiety how about asking her for help paying for cognitive therapy sessions? That will show that you have initiative to fight this thing and make a life for yourself.

Whenever I have gone to therapy, my mom always gets nosy and wants to know what we talked about. I mean, what's the point in confidentiality then?

i agree with SlyCooper your mom just want you to succeed and by pushing you she is being supportive. my mom too gets on me about going to college and finding a job. I get frustrated a lot when she gets mad at me for missing a class. but if it weren't for my mom i wouldn't have graduated high school and even registered at college (my mom basically did the whole registration thing without me i was never planning on going to college)
