Having to Blow your nose

Do you ever sit in class/work and have a runny or stuffy nose? Or even worse, a stuffy nose that's runny? But you can't go up in front of the entire class while they are sitting because that's too much pressure. And you definitly can't do it when after you get up you have to make this loud embarassing noise at the end.

So I just sit there and try to sniff it up, which still causes major anxiety because I'm aware that I sniffle more than anyone in the room. And as I said above most of the time my nose is running and stuffy at the same time, so snot would run down but I can't sniff it up. What to do then? Try to wipe it without anyone noticing.

Once in the 9th grade actually my English teacher stopped in the middle of a lecture and just said "Go get a tissue and blow your nose", GAH.

On a nose related subject I also loudly exhale through my nose alot, like noticibly loud. But that's not SA that's my OCD/tourettes.

I used to do that all the time.. just sitting there, sniffing, or holding in a cough/sneeze, while being amazed at the kids that went to the front of the class to blow their nose. I'm not so bad about that now.. but I'd rather not blow my nose in front of people.

Ignorance is bliss.

re: Having to Blow your nose

I hate having to do that in front of a class room! I don't like making loud noises in class rooms and I make the loudest noise when I blow my noise. Luckily i don't go to high school now. Which means I don't have to wait at the bus stop anymore in the cold just to go to school anymore. If the problem is really a big deal then I found out that blowing your noise after someone else helps. Everyone should be used to the noise after that or not but you can always try. Try turning in the opposite direction of the class room when you do it. Bring a tissue box of your own (remember to keep it in your book bag unseen from the rest of the class because some people like to beg for that kind of stuff).

EVERYONE needs to blow their nose sometime! Don't sweat it, it's not a big deal, and unless people are insecure about making noises themselves, no one thinks about it being rude, in fact a lot of people may not even notice you getting up.

re: Having to Blow your nose

When I was younger I was afraid of making a loud noise when sneezing, so I would always quickly plug my nose when one came on, which forced the pressure up my eustachian tubes into my my middle ear. I shouldn't have done that.

Ahhhhhh I know exactly what you mean LOL I know this has happened to me a few times recently. No way am I gonna blow my nose in front of people eeeep haha. I might be able to wipe w/a tissue, but if there's no tissue, I'd usually be too scared to ask or search for one.

Hell, I dont even think I know HOW to blow my nose.. I must be doing it wrong.

What is the most important thing you can be doing right now, and, why aren't you doing it?

re: Having to Blow your nose

HAHA I remember being nervous about that too when I was in school. It gets to the point where you have to do something about it because you can't just let your nose drip, it would be more embarrassing if people noticed that. It was the worst having a cold, everytime I'd cough, I'd feel like I was drawing attention to myself...especially when it was really quiet in the classroom.

Heh... another quirky thing that I can relate to. I wonder if "normal" people have a problem with this? I can't stand blowing my nose in front of other people. Especially in school I would just not do it. I would just ask to be excused and go to the washroom most of the time, or I would have tissues in my pocket or whatever.

re: Having to Blow your nose

When I was in school I would wait until I was between classes and then blow my nose in the bathroom. Either that or I'd do it as soon as I got in the room (I was usually one of the first people in the room).

I carry tissues if I have a cold, not to blow my nose but to at least wipe away the snot. Sometimes, I'll hold in coughs until my eyes start watering and my diaphragm feels like it's exploding in slow-mo. Then comes the awkward stifled grunt.

Just blow it yo.

A buddy I used to play basketball with would always go up and interupt the class and blow it as loud as he could.

And he had some craazzzy hair.

Hehe I know, so uncomfortable. Even when I held it in, it still built up to the point where I had to cough like hell anyway.

Yeah, I'd never blow my nose in class. I'm afraid of making too much noise and I don't like drawing the attention to myself.

I've never blown my nose in class, ha. I always go to the bathroom if I had too.
I hate coughing in class too, like somebody else here mentioned, i usualy hold it in until my eyes are practically watering and then i'm like choking lol.
I don't think I've ever even sneezed during a class.

I feel the same way. I've NEVER blown my nose in public. I'm afraid someone will tell me I'm disgusting or something. One time was pretty bad. I was sitting next to a classmate (reputation for being a hot head), and my nose was running. I didn't want to blow it because I didn't want to hear any criticism. Turns out, my sniffing irritated him and he told me I'm disgusting and need to blow my nose.
