Default trapped in the summer

I really hate when it's hot and humid outside. I just get so restless being stuck in the house cause it's too hot to go outside. the problem is my family and I have no air conditioner and while the ceiling fans are nice they don't help with really humid 100 degree days. my aunt and uncle are our landlords and they don't allow ac's in the windows cause it's not attractive enough, and portable ac's are a hassle. what do you guys think of really hot days? how do you handle it? do any of you guys live with no ac for any reason at all?

Why don't you get this kind of air conditioner?

OMG I hate this weather! We don't have real AC either, just a portable one in the living room, and one in one of the bedrooms. Plus, the house faces east-west, with no shade, so it's like an oven in here. What really gets me are these people who chirp "oh, I love this kind of weather!" I guess they have the privilege of living/working in a climatized environment. The room where the computer is isn't air conditioned, and it gets up into the 90s in here. Like a sauna. I hate summer!

I've only had one where just one was in the house (not multiple). The big thing (on the left) goes outside and there is a pipe connecting it to the small thing which goes on the wall. I do believe they have to put a hole in the wall for the pipe. It's more expensive than those window air conditioners. The good thing is that you can still use your windows. It really sucks that with window air conditioners you lose a window pretty much.

I hate hot and humid weather. A few minutes out in it and I feel sick. I mostly go out in the evenings, but then I have to get devoured by mosquitoes.

I have one of them in my bedroom mounted up by the ceiling. It is very nice. It is real quiet even on the highest fan setting I can't hardly hear it running. The outside unit is quiet too. It works good even with the bedroom door open. It has a lot of kick for a 9000 btu unit. But the only drawback an ac guy has to hook it up, and they are costlier then window units. Have to pressure test the outside unit to make sure there isn't any leaks. I also had them mount it on brackets on the side of the house and put a covering over the lines that go into the house.

Yeah, much better than the window air conditioners. In Japan, 90% of people have this type. I liked that it had a remote control. You can also heat up the house with it but I usually used kerosene heaters since they are really cheap and fast.

I'm not sure why Americans prefer window air conditioners.

I guess it is cheaper and they are easier to put in. I seen small window ac units for as cheap as $80. My minisplit can heat too, but it isn't very effective when it gets below 50 degrees due to the outside unit constantly freezes up and it has to go into defrost mode.

I would put one or two window ac units in the rear windows of the house. If the aunt and uncle notice them and complain, say they are necessary for health reasons. You could also point out that air conditioners remove humidity from the house, and thus keep it from being damaged. If it is not mentioned in the lease, and the landlord is not footing the utility bill, then I don't see how a couple of small, unobtrusive window units would be worth much of a fuss.

How do they keep their house cool? Or ask them to put in central air if aesthetics mean so much.Window units might not seem so bad when they see the bill for installing central air.
I have had my ac unit going 24/7 for the last two days here in MA.It is totally unreasonable for them not to allow some sort of ac system, especially if they are relatives.

Is it even a legal apartment? Are they declaring your rent on their taxes? Does it comply with health, fire, and all other regulations like smoke and CO detectors? There are a lot of ways to 'persuade' them into allowing ac if you want to go the nuclear option....
