It's been a while since I posted here. Anyway, I was hoping some of you guys could give me some advice with regards to my housing situation. I signed a lease until July, so I can't break the lease, so please keep that in mind. I live on the first floor of a house with paper thin walls. I am so disappointed with how poorly insulated the house is. The doors are not solid wood, I can probably punch through them, they feel so cheap. I live in the first floor, the upstairs neighbor's floor squeaks so much, it's driving me insane. Also I live across from the kitchen, so I get to hear that all the time as well. But I'm not here to complain, I'm here to get tips on what I can do to taper the noise down? The problem is, none of my roommates themselves are loud or obnoxious. It's just the house is so damn cheap and poorly built. What can I do to my room to make the sound less annoying and so I can actually get some sleep? Somethings I heard were effective: - Get a fan and just point it next to a wall, that should kill some of the noise - I was thinking about getting some speakers and just playing a sleep CD all night and just playing that at night. If I play it loud enough, it can probably drown out a lot of the noise. This might be annoying even for me. Any other ideas/suggestions? |

This is the only thing I can think of as well.
Maybe you could ask your neighbours to install carpet if they don't already have it - I think that helps slightly with the creaking.

An air purifier creates a nice noise buffer.

A fan sounds like a good idea - after a day or two of adjustment, I find the noise it makes quite comforting when trying to sleep. As for the kitchen, maybe just play some loud music when they are cooking, or go for a walk or something? How often is there kitchen noise?

I would put furniture against the walls at least. It would make the walls thicker so to speak. Having a fan would work, too. Even a space heater if it gets cold. The noise would help, too.

It is not just the noise that bothers me, it's that I'm the only one that has to deal with it. There is a decent amount of noise in the kitchen. It's really starting to bother me a lot. I'm trying to be a nice guy about it, I've never complained about it because to be fair, it's not like they are doing anything insane. But I just hate how it's always ME that has to deal with this type of stuff.
