Never been in a situation that required it (hopefully never will)
I'd also be hesitant to waste their time over something trivial. I'm amazed at some of the things police get called on, things I'd never even consider picking up the phone for.
I called them really late this past Friday night (like 3 AM), but not for anything bad. Just some extremely drunk college dude seemed to be trapped in my apartment backyard...even though there are no fences or any sort of barriers. It was freezing outside and the dude wasn't wearing a coat and he was lost behind my apartment for an hour...stumbling in circles, trying to open car doors, tapping on car windows for imaginary people to let him in the car, etc.
My parents have had to call them a few times because of the neighbours. A few years ago, they were threatening someone with a knife. Last year, they were speeding up and down the street all the time. Another time, it was for a loud fight they had outside their house. They were holding a baby upside down, too. Then they graffitied our fence and Dad's car, so we had to go to the police station with photos.
First time was as a kid in the ghetto. Some kids were tearing down the front fence. My mother knew about them and told me to call the cops (she was at work), which I did. Was pretty nervous. A cop and a detective showed up, they just said the fence looked old and to replace it, then they took off.
Later in a sleepy middle class neighborhood had some scumbag neighbors. After a year of them partying, which progressed to parties every weekend until 5am, people fighting in the street, shooting up drugs at the side of the house. I called, they gave them a warning. One of the roommates was an attorney and found out I reported them and they all started harassment. Attorney had to be hired and when they learned that they were caught on video they stopped and moved away.
Same place I lived at I heard a smashing on the window and my dog was barking like crazy. Some old woman somehow got in the backyard and was trying to break the window. I went out and she claimed people were trying to kidnap her. I let her out and called the cops. I watched as she randomly sat on the curb or was wandering in traffic. Took them over an hour to arrive. Turns out she was my neighbors grandmother that was senile and they were trying to put her in a home. Looking back I should have helped her when she was in the street. She passed like a month or so after that incident.
Other random times:
- Hanging out at the beach, apparently a guy got his tires slashed by some territorial surfers, ala Point Break. He was all shook up and came up to asked me to call which I did. Never found the outcome.
- Again at the beach a crazy homeless woman was drugged out and punching random men (and had tried to assault me).
- Heard a ton of yelling and a neighbor got his car broken into. A short while later I watched on my security camera as one of the suspects was hiding across the street as police were searching. Called and gave the location and they found the guy. Was subpoenaed to testify but he took a plea deal.
- Out walking at night and saw a suspicious guy climb over a fence into someone's backyard.
In retrospect: the police really can't do much. From all those experiences it's only practical to call the cops during a legitimate emergency.
Not me. But a housemate at one of my previous places called the cops on this middle aged hickish trashy couple that would constantly fight and argue out loud in their garage. They always hang out there with their garage door wide open. Often times they would shout well late into the night. One night they had been arguing non stop when it was like midnight. My housemate finally had it and call the police on them.
A month later, the wife was arrested after she tried running the husband over with their truck. But she missed him and ended up running into the wall of their house.
I've had a group of guys sneak into my backyard to use my pool since obviously they didn't have one in their backyard. I have a camera installed in my home and saw that they went to my backyard more than once. I didn't call the cops, but I told my dad and he was furious that he went to their home and told their dad what's been going on. Let's just say I got lucky because the dad punch his son...really hard. Poor guy, but don't be sneaking into other people's homes.
Yes - It was during the peak of the economic recession. A middle aged couple that live in the house across from me. I was watching a movie in my bedroom that overlooks that house. It was late at night when all of a sudden I heard a few loud bangs coming from across. It sounded like gunshots but I was not sure so I ignored it. About half an hour later I heard a few more loud bangs. It was almost 2am. I figure I might as well call 911 in case it could've been something bad. I called and the dispatcher already told me someone has called 911 and someone is on the way there. A cop car showed up minutes after I called. I looked out the window. Then another cop car came. Then about 6 more cop cars showed up. Crime scene yellow tape went up. I knew it was bad. Then an ambulance and eventually a crime scene van and coroner van showed up.
Turns out both the husband and wife lost their jobs and they were about to lose the house and were deep in debt. The husband suddenly just lost it and shot his wife point blank before committing suicide.
A few months later that house was on the market for very cheap. Whoever estate that house belonged to then probably was desperate to get rid of it. Some single guy bought it and moved in. I think he probably didn't believe in ghosts.

I have had to a couple times I think. Once was when some guy came to my house thinking that some girl he met lived there. I told him he had the wrong house but he didn't believe me and refused to leave. I closed the door on him finally, and he began to attempt taking off the window screen and I guess try to get through the window.
It was pretty weird. He was a young kid too, maybe in high school. He didn't look like he was on drugs or anything. He looked decent.. but he was being crazy.
It freaked me the hell out. I was home alone and was worried he was going to get inside the house. So I called the police.
Yeah, I called the cops once, years ago to report a guy that was stalking a friend of mine. She was too afraid to call them. They eventually caught him, he was charged with criminal trespass, spent the night in jail, she got a restraining order (after a whole lot of convincing from me and the cops) and he never bothered her again.
I've had the cops called on me once, after a suicide attempt. Yeah. That got ugly. I didn't try to hurt anyone else or anything. I mean, not until I refused to get into the ambulance and the cops tried to put cuffs on me and drag me there. I got roughed up a little bit lol. I didn't want to go to the hospital. I mean, I really didn't want to go. The ambulance had a police escort, and they had two cops riding in the back of the ambulance with me. I blacked out after that. I woke up in the ICU a couple of days later, intubated, with my hands and feet tied to the corners of the hospital bed. I had a police officer sitting in a chair just outside my door, until I was discharged. That was...just...not much fun. My ex-wife didn't tell anyone in my family, none of my friends I was in the hospital. No one called. No one visited. No one checked up on me. My parents still don't know about any of that, to this day.
Thankfully not. I'd be too scared to anyway. Cops terrify me even though i'm the most innocent lil person ever (well, almost). I don't trust them. They will just twist everything and arrest you for the dumbest reasons just to arrest someone and have something to do. My mom's boyfriend gets arrested all the time for just holding a bottle of alcohol in public. They wave him in like a dog just so they've done something at their shift and they know he won't fight it, lol.
No, but I will if their stupid dogs break through the fence again.
