I believe it. I believe that God is running the world, and that He's orchestrating things perfectly, He does everything for a reason. It's a part of belief in God.

I believe everything happens for a reason, I believe everyone has a plan laid out for them, that's why things always work out in the end.

Of course, things happen for a reason but the reason lies in the present and past, not the future. I suppose it all depends if you believe in something 'higher' call it what you will.

I haven't any idea if things happen for a reason but I do think that meaning can be found in anything & everything. In other words significance/meaning is born of the individual & reasons for any given event is up for debate(In my opinion).

i think people use that saying to bring closure to stuff they cant understand or when something simply doesnt have a reason. makes them feel more comfortable. it's a false sense of security.

I believe everything happens for a reason. I'll often look back on obstacles in life and relate them to a cause/effect or a new, better path.

No, probably not. The thought of everything happening for a reason is disconcerting tbh. What sort of planner would think up a plan which included a requirement for millions of humans to go blind due to a parasitic infection, for instance.

That's an interesting way to put it. In that case, yeah, I would probably say things happen for a reason. But I don't think that is the definition most people have in mind when they state "everything happens for a reason."

I like your sig line by the way.

Whenever I hear people say this I always think it's kind of egotistical. This would seem to put everyone at the center of the universe. To think this happened for me, when it would have happened regardless, I don't know. I've experienced some pretty uncanny coincidence, but I think this might have more to do with energy levels or shared frequencies or something...okay that sounds kind of crazy. Anyway I think it's up to the individual to make sense of their experiences and take from them as much as they can.

I don't really think this although there have been a few events in my life that made me really wonder. I suppose people who believe this might have had some event as well. I think this sort of view is called fatalism (fate).

Nah it's like karma just a made-up concept people use to feel better about bad things that happen. We'd like to think someone is keeping score and that there is cosmic justice in the universe. I believe in cause and effect, things happen simply because they happen and we attach our own reason and meaning to them.

Try telling the people that went through the holocaust and lost children, have been tortured etc that "everything happens for a reason"

From the last thread with this title ...

I don't think things happen for a specific reason or purpose. I think it is easy to attribute purpose to something where no purpose actually exists though. Humans are great at finding and making patterns for events and piecing them together to create a logical reason or purpose for the way things happen.

I also don't like to assign purpose to events because there are a lot of really horrific events for which no purpose seems possible (See Rowe's fawn example). Then when you start to cherry pick which events to assign purpose to and to avoid others the whole practice then seems odd to me.

Sure but its more broader than that. Its not always a good reason, sometimes a bad reason and sometimes its unknown reasons and you aren't going to know why. Not all things that happen are supposed to. We are supposed to fight against the tide and also pray. There are things that happened that can be prevented and intervened on. People aren't supposed to die early or be harmed because of other careless people.

Everything happens for a reason because of the choices we make.

I don't think everything happens for a reason(fate). I think you can learn from your life experiences though

and we are affected by the choices that other people make. I believe more in coincidence than in than in karmic retribution, fate or destiny.
