Default Buddhist Monastery... Question...

I'm not Buddhist, I was raised Roman Catholic... I'm in no way all that religious, but I am very spiritual. It's always been a dream of mine to spend time at a Buddhist Monastery for some months learning a different way of life.

Is this even possible? Where can one go to do this? Does anyone know?

Some monasteries run retreats where you can go spend a weekend to a couple weeks at the monastery practicing meditation, etc. I'd say look up Buddhist temples/monasteries in your area and see what they have going on.

I've heard of retreats but only weekend type things, i guess they probably do longer ones though. You could actually become a monk, but, yeah... seriously life changing decision there. One monk was ordained and couldn't hack it, quit 6 days later. I wonder what happened to all his material possessions when he did that...

Have you visited any temples or monasteries? I'm not buddhist, but i know people who are, i went with them a couple times just to see what it was like.

There are quite a few Buddhist meditation centers where you can rent a room for a short or long term stay and just hang out and meditate and learn from Buddhists from different walks of life.

I stayed at one for a few days when I was in high school. It was for a class, otherwise I wouldn't have chosen to go, but it was pretty relaxing and I can see how a spiritual person would get a lot out of it. I think it can be fairly expensive, but you can often get a discount if you're willing to work in the garden or help out with chores.

Here's the link for the place I went to:

I'm sure there are similar places closer to you if you do a search. Good luck.

I think you can. I went to a college in the Hudson Valley region of NY and I use to hear a lot of my classmates talking about some Buddhist temple/monastery in the area that a lot of celebrities from NYC go to (supposedly Uma Thurman goes there). But I don't know what the place is called because my classmates were all such a bunch of annoying hippies it was hard for me to listen to them talk for more than a couple minutes at a time.

Thanks for your replies! Well there is only one Buddhist temple near here, and it's more modern... Less traditional.

Yes, Inna Sense, I do meditate at home. Not all the time, but at least once a week.
