Time and time again I'm confronted by someone with a large and aggressive dog which seems determined to give me some very toothy fellatio. Just the other day I encountered some guy with his beloved alsatian, a creature that would have ripped my guts out without a moment's hesitation. As usual, the owner was holding onto the leash, saying 'Don't worry, he's harmless, he won't bite', etc. Meanwhile the dog is lunging towards me with a raging hard-on born of pure bloodlust, and for a moment I clearly heard it say, in a dog voice, 'Vincenzo Coccotti'. I've long thought that dogs were the lowlife bar brawlers of nature, and this is proven to me day after day. I truly don't understand why they're kept as pets. anyone else?

I've only kept the neutered kind. Once you've had a great dog you'll never want to be without one.

Not all dogs are crappy like that. Some, I find, are really friendly. I'm partial to cats, though, because they mind their own business, and usually freak out before I do. Sometimes they follow me around, which is weird.
Anyway, yeah. I know what you mean about annoying dogs. A lot are kept and neglected in back yards, and do nothing but bark at people all day from behind flimsy fences. Why do they even bother owning a dog?- For protection? Looks more like a liability to me. |

While I stood there talking to my cousin, he snuck up behind me, lifted and somehow hung his front legs over my shoulders, and attempted to get on with some strange up-right doggy style romping. Ugh! I knocked him off of me but had to sit on the couch to avoid further trouble. Talk about weird - usually they just try to hump your leg.

My little terrier is my best friend. She always wants to be with me. It doesn't matter what I'm doing outside, as soon as I'm out the door she wants to come along. She will cry and make a terrible fuss if I forget and leave her inside. Every night when I get home from work she's happy to see me and comes running with one of her toys wanting to play. I can't imagine not having her around, she gives me something to look forward to every day.

I think this thread should be called "animal owner haters". It isn't the dogs fault that the owner won't control it. And about dogs barking outside... it isn't their fault! Wouldn't you be screaming to be let inside if you were chained to a tree in zero to a hundred degree weather?
While I understand that some people just don't like dogs, it isn't fair to say the dog is annoying when in this case, it's clear that it's the owner's ignorance. I'm sorry you had to deal with someone that stupid.

I don't really care for dogs. The dogs that I had were nice animals, but I do not want to pet other people's dogs. When I was six, I begged my parents for a dog. He was HUGE, but he was a very nice animal. Someone stole/killed him when I was 9. The other dog I had (who just died) was brought home during one of my mother's whims when I was 12. I ended up being the one to care for him, otherwise he wouldn't be fed or anything. She just gets things and then becomes bored with them right after, leaving me to clean up.
I hate it when I'm at a relative's home and my mother says to me, "Come pet the dog. Pet the dog. Get over here and pet the dog. He wants you to pet him. He's looking at you. Pet the dog, pet the dog. I don't know why you won't pet the dog. Just pet the dog." I reluctantly walk over to stroke his head and wish to destroy my own mother for annoying me to that degree. I immediately wash my hands and ignore the dog. I like cats, though. |

Part of it is the owner....
Case in point - Easter weekend. My stepmom had to take my stepcat to the veterinarian because she was having allergy problems (she rubs the fur off from around her eyes and ears, so she is given a shot). Anyway, she, my Dad, and I (whose eyes were also red if you remember my false-alarm 'pink eye' thread!) were sitting in the open waiting room when two guys walk in, each with a doberman pinscher. Anyway, both were pretty, but one was clearly bigger and kept growling and barking at the other. The 'runt' was the same height, but visibly thinner, and much friendlier. Anyway, we found out that the two were actually brothers and were separated two years previous. By looking at the owners of each, you could tell how they raised their pet! In my case, I had a cocker spaniel (tan American version). He was so friendly, it would scare bigger dogs! He'd just run across the street and sniff around. If there was another dog around, he'd just stand there wagging his little stump of a tail while the other dog was apprehensive! We'd get mad because he'd run across the street and "lose track of time" ![]() It depends on the owner - unless the dog had to fend for himself as a puppy, which is seemingly more unlikely these days.

I steer clear of any dog I pass by on the street. A lot of owners around here have their dogs off the leash and frankly, I don't trust any dog. Enforce the leash law!

I love dogs. I love all animals, actually. I am vegetarian, a member of animal rights organizations and the ASPCA. I am also a dog groomer and I used to volunteer at a shelter. BUT... we need to be realistic here. I know that a lot of people are in the day-dreamy state where they think that every animal is cuddly and wants to be loved. While that may be true a lot of the time, it's still very unsafe to not have dogs under control. They're animals. They're unpredictable. Trust me, I work with them 8 to 10 hours a day, sometimes 7 days a week. I know what I'm talking about. People need to be responsible and realize that they aren't invincible.

99% of all problems with dogs come from owners not knowing how to properly train. Dogs have mental illness just like anyone else so occasionally you will come across one that is not trainable. But over all they need the just right training. My dog will not go up to you without be called over he has a touch of social anxiety himself.
He definitely will not jump on you. He wouldn't think of biting. Never growled a day in his life. I admit it I have a terrible time understanding how anyone could dislike dogs. They do so much for us. More then we deserve. They see for the blind, they hear for the deaf, they help the disabled, they sniff out bombs and drugs, they do search and rescue, and are always there whenever you need them. I have never been without a dog and never will. I actually feel a little bit sorry for people that have never had the love for a dog or any other pet it's just dogs are special to me. Especially people with anxiety just having them is so calming. There are some people with anxiety that actually use a dog as a service dog because they feel better in public with the dog.

In defense of the owners, some dogs (breeds) are just programmed for certain things. My Catahoula Leopard goes after children, people on bikes, and anyone that tries to touch her or walk near her. It's not at all the way we raised her, she's just bred to herd and has always been really suspicious of new people. Our UPS guy is petrified of her! She's the sweetest thing with us, though.
About a year later, we got a Shih Tzu, who started out as such a friendly, open dog. But he eventually took on the personality of our first dog (she's his world!) and now he won't let strangers touch him and almost bit my boyfriend. |

She just wants to do her job. What I did with my nut is start him on something called Nothing in life is free or NILIF. It's where your dogs must work before they do anything. Such as making them sit before they eat, making them wait so you go through the door first. etc. There are all kinds of sites on the net to explain the whole process. Heres one to get you started.http://www.k9deb.com/nilif.htm It will help so that when you out you can teach her not to try to chase. Include the shih tzu those little guys are cute as a button but still dogs and make sure your boyfriend does the nilif too so he sees your boyfriend before him in the pack.
