Default Psychedelia

Anyone else into psychedelia? I don't know about the US but in the UK there's a brilliant series of psychedelic albums entitled 'nuggets'. I only have the first album which covers 1965-1969.

My definitive favourite band would be the Doors, but I also love Count Five, Love, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Thirteenth Floor Elevators and the Electric Prunes. I'd be interested in discovering anything I might not have heard already, if anyone has any suggestions

I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to say that I'm a fan too. I especially love Jefferson Airplane.

Love Grateful Dead, especially their American Beauty album, I could listen to that one anytime. Do you have a favorite album by them?

Yes, American Beauty! Although I have a boxset and a 'best of', American Beauty seems to be the best album. Have you heard 'Eyes of the world'?

I didn't mention Hendrix because that goes without saying The God.

Psychedelia emcompasses so many things that it's hard to know where to start!...

Love & The Grateful Dead are my favourite of the big American psychedelic bands. I think The Grateful Dead were potentially the greatest live band of all time, hence I've never found American Beauty that appealing since I find it pretty unrepresentative. I think the pinnacle of their psychedelic era was prior to 1969 & their first 3 albums, though my favourite is probably Blues For Allah. I really wish I could have seen them live...

I used to listen to a lot of British psych too...The Nice & Crazy World of Arthur Brown recorded some good things, though I mainly love the early Canterbury Scene, e.g Soft Machine, Gong, Hatfield & The North etc.
& The Incredible String Band. & Donovan even though everyone seems to hate him now.

Yes! This is true. Probably worthy of it's own thread, except that no one would post in it. Acid Mothers Temple are probably my favourite of all modern psychedelic bands, though the whole Japanese Heavy Psych scene that gave birth to them is amazing.
High Rise really took the garage thing to it's logical extreme (along with its spin off bands Mainliner, Ohkami No Jikan etc...). Bands like Fu****susha, Kousokuya & Overhang Party are amazing but probably too dissonant for a lot of people to be honest. White Heaven are probably the most reminiscent of Western psych, given the Quicksilver Messenger Service influence. They're brilliant if you can get past the vocals, though most of their releases were so limited almost nobody seems to have actually heard them

I don't believe so, though I tend to be horrid with titles since I like a million and one things. I'll have to check it out!

Nuggets is really neat. I've only heard the first one as well. I know it's titled "Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era" but I find it's more obscure garage rock than psych.

Speaking of Love, does anyone know about or have a mono mix of Forever Changes? I'd love to get my hands on that.

Love are phenomenal. As are Pink Floyd, but I only really liked their stuff with Syd.

Also: The Zombies, Procul Harum, Syd Barrett solo, SMiLE, Tyrannosaurus Rex, The Chameleons, The Olivia Tremor Control, Animal Collective, of Montreal.

Seconding the Canterbury recommendation (Soft Machine, Gong, etc.). As well as Can and other German bands. Possibly earlier Kraftwerk, for example. To add my own contribution to the mix, I suggest you look into Sun Ra. Not rock, but parts of his vast catalogue are very psychedelic.

I know they're a modern band, but the band Mars Volta is pretty psychedelic.

Also, the Miles Davis album B****es Brew is pretty psychedelic sounding, although it's not really considered psychedelia.

Nuggets is great. Also check out the Pebbles compilations for more obscure stuff.

I think quite a lot of Miles can be readily considered psychedelic on some level. He certainly wasn't taking his cues from jazz at the time, especially the albums he made in the 70s like On The Corner & Dark Magus etc. And he was playing to rock audiences at the time (e.g. with The Dead, Neil Young, at IOW). I think that says a lot. It's good stuff anyway, though more at the free/experimental end of the spectrum.
I think this thread has inspired me a little to listen to some of the random psychedelic records I have (e.g. HP Lovecraft, SRC, Summertime by Big Brother & The Holding Company) so it can't be a bad thing really...
