Default I'm not the only one who does this.

Sometimes I just want the TV to be on. I want the noise. Even though I'm not really watching, I have a few of go-to channels when I do this:
Sleuth.
Comedy Central.
Crime & Investigation Network.

What are yours?

Yes completely, it's very common with people that are lonely and I include myself in that. Having the TV on in the background makes you feel less like you're alone for some reason.

The sound of silence can be deafening.

I will usually stick on BBC News 24.

I used to do that. I don't have cable, so there's nothing to watch all day. Recently I've just started listening to music all the time.

Yea if i'm alone for a prolonged period of time i'll turn it on to get rid of the cold, lonely chill of silence.

I'll admit that I leave the TV on...and then put my earbuds in...I'm very good at wasting electricity.

I put on a movie at night, I listen to it and it stops me thinking too much.

does that count

Nah, you're not pathetic. Whenever you do it, there are probably other people doing it at the exact same time, possibly on the same channel, so really, you're not even alone. You're just not close to all other people.

London's Biggest Conversation 97.3 FM

I'm not really listening, but every so often I'll catch someone being discussed, complain about it and then continue whatever I'm doing.

I do the same. I either find a good movie I've seen eight hundred times before or:
The BBC World News
Adult Swim
The 40s, 50s, or 60s music channels
Chiller
SyFy (or however they spell Scifi, now, I think it now sounds like see-fee)
The History Channel
Discovery Channel
Food Network (Paula Deen and Ace of Cakes, mostly, gotta build up those cooking skills for whenever I get a man, lol)
Travel Channel

The Food Network, definitely. That's my staple channel. I even sleep with it on.

I like the sound of a hockey game in the background. Even if I'm not watching it, the sound of the skate blades on the ice, the commentators energy, and the atmosphere of the crowd.

It's like I'm there... without actually having to be there.

I do the same thing - except this is one way I deal with insomnia. You see, I get so anxious at night that I can't sleep. I worry about everything you can possibly worry about: job, health, etc. I usually end up laying on the couch and turning on the TV. The dialogue distracts me from my thoughts and the flashing light is kind of hypnotizing, and it sometimes helps me to sleep.
