I like the Kathleen Mallory novels, they are very dark and graphic though. The link is for the first one if you want to read the summary.

This may be kind of obvious, but what about Agatha Christie's Poirot novels? Also, Maigret by Georges Simenon and Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels.
Oh, when you say 'good for twenty-somethings', what exactly do you mean? Sorry if my suggestions are a bit grannyish, they're just some that I like.
