Default Sports team mascots

I don't follow US sports very closely but recently I heard that some team has a chicken as their mascot. How is a chicken in any way intimidating? What is it going to do? Peck with its beak? I would be embarrassed to have a chicken as something that represents me or my institution.
The college I go to also has a particularly non-threatening mascot, a buckeye. It's a state tree or something. Again, not something that is going to strike terror in the hearts of opponents.

EDIT: this is a light hearted post, not meant to offend anyone.

I always thought mascots were used to cheer up the local fans, not so much to intimidate the opponents. I mean, if some logo is going to intimidate an athlete, he should probably see a doctor rather than stepping out on the field.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of mascots.

I like unusual mascots. It would be boring if everyone was the Lions, Tigers, or Bears.

The Reds have Mr. Red, a dude with a baseball head.
The Bengals have a tiger, whose probably been declawed after 20 losing seasons.
