Default Roger Clemens in the Hall of Fame?

He was just found not guilty of perjury. He never tested positive for steroids or PEDs. Without the PED allegations he would be an easy induction to the Hall. But it seems to me that most people believe he did use PEDs - especially the writers who vote. The precedent seems to be Shoeless Joe Jackson who is certainly one of the greatest hitters of all time. He was acquitted in court but he never made the Hall.

I wish it wasn't called the Hall of Fame. If we can't put them in there, there should still be room for them in what is meant to be a museum of baseball...and like or not, these guys played and had large impacts. It should be noted.

Absolutely, yes, regardless of the PEDs.

Hell no. I'm of the opinion that using performance enhancing drugs in professional sports should be a crime, same as fraud in any other area which gains you millions of dollars is.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I get that a lot of people don't want to see Roger Clemens or Barry Bonds giving a Hall of Fame acceptance speech anytime soon, but we can't just pretend that these guys didn't exist and weren't among the very greatest of all time.

I have no problem with guys like Palmeiro or even Sosa and McGwire not getting in; those guys were borderline anyway, and their greatest seasons were no doubt PED fueled. But Clemens and Bonds were already all-time greats even before they started their PED use.

Plus, it annoys me that the same sports media that totally enabled this stuff when it was going on are acting so indignant and sanctimonious about it now. Nobody even wanted to think about it when McGwire and Sosa were putting on their show in '98, and anyone who did was considered a killjoy--wasn't the guy who initially pointed out the andro in McGwire's locker more or less pooh-poohed as exactly that?

In any case, PED use was so widespread that sorting out who used and who didn't, and to what degree it actually helped them, is pretty much impossible. So, at this point, I just don't care. Treat this era, warts and all, like every other (and every era has had its warts), and move on.

A lot of the guys he was pitching to during that time period were probably roided up, so the playing field was actually even most of the time.

Bonds and Clemens were already very good before they got on the roids

I think Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame too, so maybe I'm way too lenient.

I think Rose should be in the Hall too - with an asterisk that he was banned from the game for gambling on it. That would be one awkward induction ceremony though, letting the guy make a speech. Maybe they should wait unto he dies and then quietly induct him.

I'm fine with the lifetime ban for Rose . . . unlike a lot of the steroid guys, he broke a baseball rule that was officially on the books, and a major one at that. I'd be ok with him being inducted posthumously, though (it's only a lifetime ban, after all).
