Default MMA= No Skills

Whenever boxing fanatics try to make the argument that MMA requires no skills, that boxing is a science, etc..., the best way to explain it to these people who don't have much knowledge about the sport is to admit that you don't have to be the best in the disciplines. You don't have to be the best boxer, muay thai fighter, wrestler, etc... It takes a lifetime for a person to master a discipline. Many professional boxers started from an early age and even to this day are still trying to improve. NOBODY can be the best professional boxer AND a muay thai fighter AND a wrestler, etc... all in the same time. Anderson Silva is good but isn't likely to be the best muay thai fighter out there or the best in brazilian jiu jitsu, he might be mediocre in all disciplines when you compare him to the best, BUT what makes it impressive is that he is well trained in these disciplines and has been able to be a well rounded fighter since he can apply his knowledge of all disciplines and use them so effectively in fights that it's been impossible to defeat him the UFC which is hard for fighters to do. Boxers trying to constantly improve in their sport? Try MMA, there are 5 main disciplines you must now train in so this will significantly increase your chances of having more weaknesses. An MMA fighter can be impressive in standing up but once he's taken to the ground he lost his advantage and is exposed. MMA gives you the option of picking another discipline to use when you are fighting a guy who is better than you in a specific area. Like I said, mastering a discipline takes a lifetime so of course they're not going to be the best boxer AND kickboxer AND wrestler and muay thai fighter AND brazilian jiu jitsu, that's UNHEARD of. This explains why it's difficult to have a professional undefeated record in MMA. Junior Dos Santos isn't champion because he's a good striker, but if it wasn't for his good take down defense he would have lost a long time ago. The only reason why it's harder for an average person to become a professional boxer is that they only are given 1 option, boxing, BUT they must master this discipline, be the best of the best at it. You can choose from many more in MMA and you don't have to be the best. MMA requires MORE skills.

I thought this argument has ended long ago. I never knew it was still being raised.

Ever since I really started watching MMA I havent been able to watch boxing. I appreciate boxing for what it is. But MMA will always be the more "pure" combat sport imo. Hence the need to be well rounded like you said.

Sometimes, I imagine taking a leg kick from an MMA fighter, and I cry at just the thought...

I've always hated these debates to be honest. Because I trained a little in everything. Although boxing is what I will watch first. I try to give credit to all professional fighters no matter what the discipline is. It's takes guts to get in the ring or that octagon thing and fight by the "rules" when your getting your butt whip.

Your opinions may be true, but it's also what makes MMA a watered down sport as well.
MMA just doesn't excite me anymore unless people are throwing kicks and punches. I'm tired of seeing the wrestling/grappling. It's also much easier to see mismatches since the opponents are not equally trained in each skill.
Last but not least, MMA is a bs trend of a sport for youngsters primarily. I see one more tap-out shirt im gonna flip out on someone. Everyone and their mother thinks they're a damn MMA fighter these days. Or maybe it's the best excuse for two guys to stick each others faces in their a**ses, i dunno. But it's sorta corny now for sure.

I wonder what would happen if You put switch them and made the fight in a boxing ring? Toney would win.

I lost all respect for boxing after Mike Tyson tried to make his comeback and they were making very questionable judgement calls to make him look like a beast. I haven't been able to watch it since Lennox Lewis destroyed him and had him running for his life.

I enjoy MMA because of the various styles and the great amount of preparation it takes to participate. I admit when I first started watching and the fight would go to the ground I would get bored, but now that I have learned the strategy, and understand and can see what they're trying to do it's my favorite part of the sport.
