Yeah, that was one heck of a match! Ireland are shaping up nicely as a team.

The coverage in Australia has been rubbish but it's been a great tournament, the most even in a while. I've been following through cricinfo and watching online streams when games have been close or interesting. Great to see Bangladesh beat England, really rooting for them to make the quarters, their fans are insanely passionate. Australia are looking quite shaky atm, it's gonna be very difficult for them to win given their spin stocks and the state of most of the subcontinent pitches they've played on and will play on. I'd probably have India or South Africa as favourites atm. If Australia can't win, I'd love to see Sri Lanka do it.

I haven't been convinced at all by this World Cup; with the exception of the match between India and South Africa, a good amount of the exciting cricket has come as a result of England playing badly. The format is horrible and is making sure that the entire tournament lasts twice as long as it should and has meant sides like Canada and Kenya struggle for wins and will have had their confidence dented by being mercilessly thrashed five or six times. The Australian and England players are surely burned out as well, having entered the World Cup so soon after another needlessly long one day series.
With all that being said, it's been great to see the emergence of Imran Tahir as a really solid spin option for South Africa, the one thing they'd really lacked. I'd also like to see Sri Lanka win, they've got some really exciting talents in their ranks and I love some of the more "unorthodox" cricket they play. One side I was hoping to see a little more from was Zimbabwe, who are obviously suffering from their international isolation and a lack of quality pace bowlers, but have also got some pretty interesting young players who I'd love to see go far. |

I agree the format is horrible. It's basically a knockout tournament after the league stage. There's hardly any excitement in figuring out which 8 teams make it through to the quarters. Well, only England is providing some of that entertainment. But after the league stage, the tournament will look like the ICC Champions Trophy. It would have been far more exciting with a Super 6, with only 4 teams making it through to the Semis.
But it's great to see emerging stars from the minnow teams. Douschate will be playing for KKR in the IPL and I'm sure Kevin'O Brien too will get a lucrative contract from one of the other teams. By the way, I've always wondered, do any non-Indians follow the IPL?? Back to the World Cup, apart from India, I'd love to see West Indies perform well. The younger Bravo certainly has a bit of that Lara flair in his batting. This is definitely one of the closest World Cups. Any one of SA/India/Australia/Sri Lanka can win. But I fear the Aussies are going to win yet again. Sri Lanka next in line coz they have a balanced side, great batsmen in Sanga and Jayawardene, great fast bowler in Malinga, and great spinner in Murali. SA too, but they have a long history of choking in crunch situations. Won't comment about India - don't wanna jinx it. |
