Default Is This Forum Ageist?

What exactly does "crickets" refer to? I couldn't find anything in the guidelines. What does it mean to you? Silence? If you are over 40 and socially anxious, is it some kind of woebegone tragedy?

As far as I know, "crickets" originated as an in-joke among the older members of the board, as opposed to being a dismissive label applied to us. I think it had something to do with the fact that when this section of the board was created, it was so quiet that all you could hear were the crickets. There was a thread about this, as far as I can remember, on the old version of the board, but the old threads have disappeared now. Someone else who has been here longer will know exactly how the name came about. It puzzled me too at first.

Amelia has it right. The original section head was "Boomers" or "Baby boomers" I believe, and it went through periods of inactivity like it does now, and someone made the "crickets" joke, and it stuck.

Maybe it's about time to finally bid adieu to the old name and give this subforum a less confusing name? Might attract more older members to drop by!

We should keep a memorial crickets-thread, though!

I believe "crickets" denotes members who are 30+. Since a lot of us don't seem to post that much, this forum is generally quiet... so quiet you can hear crickets in the background. I find the term kind of funny, actually.

Amelia is basically right. We used to have 4 age groups. Teens, 20s, 30 somethings and the Baby-Boomers. The Baby-Boomers was not getting much action and someone made a post about hearing nothing but crickets, The name stuck. Even after the age forums went away we have always had a Crickets Forum. We did bring back the Teens about a year ago.
