I earned a PhD a couple of months ago - great...wait....but no job. It's funny how others can get a job offer, wait... multiple job offers long before they completed their study while I can't. Even funny is that all they worry about is the amount of pay they got offered after interview. They are so confident and optimistic they nailed the job while all I worry about is whether I ****ed up during the interview or not. Getting a job is much easier when you already working a job. It's funny those who needed the job the most won't get any.
It's so embarrassing I'd love to hide under the bed forever.
Well, congrats on attaining your PhD and contributing to the frontiers of knowledge. Good luck on the job search. It sounds like you will be getting more interviews..
Which is why I've a masters and yet I'm working as a laborer. Nobody would hire me for a position that would use my degree without having worked in years. So I'm rebuilding my resume. Literally in this case.
Job hunting itself is a skill. There are a lot of rules to it: how to write a cover letter, how to write a resume, how to answer particular types of questions they ask in a job interview, etc. Part of getting a job is figuring out the system, which is easier for some than others.
I'm in the exact same situation, and have been to professionals for resume writing, cover letter writing etc. But don't worry it's just the way the world works today. The highest unemployment rate is actually among PhD grads, so you're not alone.
I know this is stating the obvious, but the longer you're without a job, the harder it will get. And from my own experience, it can get really hard, really quick. I hope for you that you're still relatively young.

Yeah buddy. This is why I'm not getting a PhD in physics. Stopped at BSc. I saw this situation years ago, too many people with PhDs and not enough jobs for them. There are research positions in the private sector, but they offer bang average pay and require a consistent history of published journals lmao. Why do a PhD in science for average pay when you can do an MSc in mathemetical finance and earn double, or train as an electrician and run your own company? Academia is kind of like being in the womb... it's comfortable and safe but you're only delaying the inevitable. Can't survive on stripends my whole life.
I wouldn't say it's ignorant, just a general misconception. Most of my family was like "So what are you doing after your PhD., traveling the world and living in a mansion." And I'm like "No, the cashier in the grocery store down the street and the janitor will make more than I do." And that's a fact.
PhDs in most fields are only for knowledge and does not translate into better careers.
I have an Associate's Degree in Computer Programming and 35 years of experience and I can't find a job either. I think another recession is on it's way. Capitalism is a joke. The republicans are going to blow up the economy again. They like to buy real estate really cheap and send our jobs overseas. But the joke is on them because without jobs we can't buy anything. Plus they are destroying the planet and they won't be able to buy another one from Hammacher Schlemmer catalog.
My wife has degree in computer programming and another in networking but since IT doesn't allow women, she can't even get interviews.
100 million Americans are still without jobs and another 100 million are under-employed. Yet we voted for more trickle-down voodoo fascism... it boogles the mind. Let's give the billionaires more tax breaks because they are the ones that are really suffering
I hope to 'eventually' go for a PhD, but not now. I want to get in better health and to get a better job. I also want to have a dating life for once, and to travel.
