Default For Female Crickets-Do you have a hard time shopping for clothes?

I'm 44 and go a little nuts when clothes shopping. I don't want to wear "old lady" clothes - but I also don't want to look as if I'm dressing like a 16 year old. Often it seems it's one extreme or the other - What about you?

oh my god - thank you thank you thank you!

another of my pet peeves!!!!!! I hate this, I absolutely, bloody hate it. YOu think it's bad there - it's even worse over here.

My only choices are the dead-of-winter collection from One Foot In The Grave or I-Like-To-Smell Like Bubblegum outfits with a skirt that looks like a cummerbund.

This is why I sew my own clothes. This is also why I never have much to wear. I hate what's in the stores, but I work full time. I never have enough time to sew. It's also why I wear jeans and a t shirt every weekend.

Yes,the low-rise jeans covered in embelishments and navel baring tops.-Or the jeans that come up to your armpits and tops that look like maternity wear. One extreme or the other!!

Luckily I've got the figure of a young boy so I can get away with wearing the low rise pants they make nowadays and long-length tops so my midriff isn't showing. I am starting to buy a little longer shorts though just because I realize I'm edging my way up towards 50. (Yikes!) I've always wondered how people transition into the polyester stage of life?? Is it a conscious decision or is it just that styles change, and at some point with age you cease to notice so maybe I'll still be wearing my low-rise jeans twenty years after they've gone out of style and low-rise will become the new polyester??

kpiper-I know exactly what you mean! You see these women with gobs of makeup-probably looked ok when they were younger - now it looks scary!! You wonder if you'll realize when something goes from pretty to weird.

Omg I've found myself inadvertently in the juniors section of the store, hahaha! Or the misses seem too dressy, like we're supposed to spend our lives in the office.
It's hard to strike a balance. I don't like to really follow trends, either, so just dress to please my self, that's all.

i was just browsing the crickets section even though i'm 21, and i just wanted to say that i think older women look very cute in layered tops, like short sleeve shirt over a long sleeved one, or maybe a tank top under a low-cut t-shirt, and jeans. It's young and not trying to be 16, and it looks great

Ooo, also those plaid, long sleeve, button-up shirts that are popular now. That looks so cute!

I hope I'm not being rude by popping into this part of the forum. I just thought the topic was interesting.

Same problem here with clothes buying. Its like one extreme, teeny boppers or old ladies clothes. Nothing in between. I now where longer shorts too.
Last year JC Penny's had a great sale on sun dresses, tried them on, oh did I look like a fool.

You're not being rude.
I do like to wear clothes in layers, maybe I'll try that. I remember there was a trend like that in the 80's of the opposite layering, t-shirts under sweaters. But some of that has com back now?
I do like to wear simple skirts, with a nice blouse. And keep it more modern and not peasanty. That way I'm not dressing like a teen or an old lady. Also I feel very feminine in skirts and sometimes dresses. Dresses have a more formal feel to them whereas skirts can become casual.
I remember the ladies from "What not to wear" said that women should not wear shorts, so not feminine, more skirts. As long as it's kept nice and comfortable.

I don't like clothes shopping b/c it's overwhelming. just too many...clothes! I prefer shopping online, although that has its drawbacks. I agree that everything seems mostly geared toward young people - esp pants waist. When is that trend going to end?

Nah, you can wear shorts. You got to remember Stacy has the European hairstylist Nick bully women into short haircuts yet she sports a rockin real long one, so hmmmmm, you can't always listen to her. Yeah, shorts are fine in my opinion as long as they are like skirts are right above the knees for looking its best, I love fitted jean shorts like that, spandex workout wear and looser khaki pants, actually its not just for us older people, its just being modest.

I just stick to trousers and shirts - never been one for following fads. On the rare occassion I buy something I force myself to try it on because almost everything I have purchased without trying on is doomed to be ill fitting.
