I don't think I'll give you much of advice, but I know what you're going thru. I am required to give an one-hour presentation of my research every 3 months or so. Everytime I'm thinking about making up an excuse, but so far I've done it. But the anxiety is just terrible: the day before I spend in restroom cramping, I get no sleep the night before and one time, during the presentation, I had to excuse myself in the middle of the talk and had to run to restroom to throw up

I know I went through this for my graduation project in senior year in high school and had to explain my teacher that I have SA and I am fighting it. Now I never said that I would back down, as I said to her, I am FIGHTING and willing to do this presentation to increase my confidence. I got a lot of anxiety out of it, but still passed!

I have two presentations to do, but luckily they are only small and only about for about 15% of my grade this semester. I think I'll just email my tutors explaining that I cannot do them and I understand the consequences. I will just have to work extra hard on everything else...

1) Practice presenting in your basement or car a ton.
2) If you feel uncomfortable with saying something you've written, then pencil it in during rehearsal until the whole thing feels smooth to you. 3) make little bitty notes on note cards that contain the first few words of each sentence, or key phrases of each sentence. The idea here is to be able to just glance down and read the first few words, and recall the rest of the sentnece. Ideally, by the end, you won't need to look at the cards during the presentation (but feel free to during the presentation just to catch your breath and all that --that's what I did). 4) To get my voice in shape I sing very loudly along with some of my albums until my voice is a little horse. For some reason, talking with that voice is easier for me. Do you like the thesis? If you don't like the thesis that will make things a lot more difficult. When I give presentations I do so in the hopes that it will engage and entertain the audience, that's what gets me by. |
