Things i've tried: reboot hardware, remove router, played with network card settings, checked tcp/ip, release and renew ip (says media disconnected), installed new driver for nic card, done windows updates, disabled and re-enabled nic.

Try updating your network card drivers and setting up a static IP

Sounds like a driver issue. With Windows 7 being relatively new, updating the driver might not necessarily fix the issue. What kind of NIC is it?

I have tried to update the driver using the windows 7 update, the microsoft signed driver made no difference. It's a realtek pcie gbe family adaptor. I also tried a static ip address on the weekend, no such luck same issue.
Thanks for the replies but i did solve the problem, i just re-installed xp for now and when windows 7 comes out hopefully microsoft will have fixed it. It could be something with the release candidate software.

Just cause I'm curious, what version of Windows 7 were you running? I'm running RC1 Build 7100 atm.

Prob just have to wait for it to be fixed. There's still a few issues with Win7, and drivers for it as well. I randomly lose sound and have to disable /enable my sound card to get it back, and USB devices sometimes stop working after sleep til i restart. Still the rest is awesome, i'm sure it'll all be fixed eventually.
