Default Windows 7

OK I decided I'm going to buy this one. I saw two different ones at WalMart, one for $114 and one for $140 (give or take, cant recall the exact dollar amount for both). Are these good prices for Windows 7? Its seems too cheap to me.

There are different versions available. Some are better than others. I'd check to see what versions you are looking at.

If they are the same version(home premium, pro or ultimate) one is likely an upgrade and the other the full retail version. Sounds about right, in C$ it's 129$ for the upgrade and 199$ for retail. The upgrade will work if you have a legal preexisting windows operating system installed and will allow you to either upgrade or do a fresh install. Note that with xp you cannot upgrade and need to do a fresh install, vista however will allow you to upgrade. The retail version is meant for people who do not have an operating system installed already.

Aside from the start/task bar change... What else is different/better in 7?

I lost faith in Microsoft after Vista because I was expecting a lot more. Like 7 seems to offer. I'm a mac user these days.

It is essentially windows vista done the way it should have been. However microsoft actually worked with computer vendors like Hp and Sony among some to work out the best way to implement the new operating system and what changes to make. Many suggestions and changes have been made thanks to the hardware vendors input. Also windows allowed beta testing and listened to customer feedback this time after they got burned by vista's poor reception. Many of the bugs and annoyances of vista have been removed or fixed (the in your face security warnings all the time for example ). It is faster than xp and vista and there should be none of the driver and hardware compatability issues that happened when vista was first released. Not to mention it looks nicer.

I'm still awaiting my copy thanks to UPS screwing up, but i will post my impressions of home premium once i get it setup tomorrow.

buy the upgrade, never buy the full. Do some googling and find the trick to install the upgrade without a previous OS, which involves installing and registering the upgrade OS(since its an upgrade you can't register it anyways at first) and then run the disc and install again to get the upgrade, pretty much upgrading from the upgrade.

I'd wait a few months before buying it. I got Vista right when it came out and a lot of my software wouldn't work on it. It's a takes a little while for the manufactures to release new versions that are compatible.
