So is this simply not possible? I hate to sound impatient, and I know no one owes me anything, but I'm just eager to find an answer because my brother's staying over and I like to have my privacy.

No, there's not much you can do if you don't have a wireless adapter and can't physically connect the computer to the router with ethernet cable.

Cable modems have a USB port as well as Cat5. You can plug a USB cable in to the Modem directly and still use your normal connection.

The PC in my room has a wireless adapter already installed, but it's not same type as the one that goes with my router.
Also, I don't know if I still have the CDs containing the software that came with the router. Should that be a problem? |

I'm not computer savvy in the slightest, but my laptop has total wireless capability. I have a "wireless LAN" switch, and that apparently serves as the adapter; I don't suppose you have anything like that on your computer? (Well, if you did, I suppose you'd already be using it). Just in case (I doubt this is even remotely helpful): I right click on the network icon listed on the right side of the tool bar and click 'connect to a network,' which then shows a list of networks that I can connect to, and I find my network. If the network is locked, it asks for a passcode in order to gain access, which (I believe) is the barcode on the back of the router. I don't know if it matters for my particular computer which type of router is being used, because I can search for a signal in any place that has internet access, and I usually connect with no problems.
I don't know of any other way to connect without a physical adapter, sorry. |

There's no wireless LAN switch.
Also, there's no phone jack in my brother's room, which I forgot about, so even if the adapter on my computer would work with the router I own, there'd be no way to hook it up in his room. We do have this extra long industrial phone cable (I used it for a time when I was having problems with my phone jack), and I was thinking of running that from his room to the phone jack downstairs, but my grandfather cut off the half that ran from the stairs into the living room. I guess I just have to deal with my brother for however long he's staying. Thanks anyway. |
