Documenting your DIY creation for the web? Offering up some jewelry or electronics for sale on Craigslist or Etsy? An Instructables user who's got a way with lenses offers up both simple and advanced versions of a solid how-to guide.

If you're not that experienced at shooting things close up, Instructables user Bloomautomatic's case for using the timer whenever possible might just be a revelation. There's ample evidence provided in the form of great macro shots, and a simple block of text you can feel free to forward to your friends needing help with their new cameras:

Set the focus to macro mode, turn off the flash, and set the timer.
Set up the camera on a tripod, or on a table so it won't move.
Place the object to be photographed in front of it.
Press the shutter button and take your hand off the camera.

Click through Bloomautomatic's quick guide, and you'll get a deeper explanation of how to set up lighting, position objects to compensate for a consumer camera's narrow depth of focus, and a few other ideas worth keeping in mind. As noted in the post, great detail on a close-up shot can significantly boost the selling power of a gadget or other small item.
